check the check engine light

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to find the code when the check engine light comes on, with out a sensor reader? I know on my old chevy cavalier there was a trick with turning on the key and turning it off that would prompt the codes to be displayed on the dash. Does anyone know if there is something similar to this?

no trick. you have to have a reader. autozone and O'Reilly's will do it for free.

+1 for free reads as Eric said above, you could also pick up an ULTRAGAUGE for less than $80 shipped I believe and have your own reader and much MUCH more. Just an idea to think over because you get a lot of great features with the ULTRAGAUGE that the Sonic doesn't have.

With an Ultragauge you'll even have a temp gauge! It will pick up on codes before your cel ever comes on. Well worth the money IMO.

But in the meantime, drop by an Oreilly's and ask for their code reader. My local store makes you do it yourself, but it's still free.
