We've updated our reliability stats for the Sonic to include owner experiences through September 30, 2014.
Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2013 Sonic: 47, moderate
2012 Sonic: 36, moderate

New stuff this time. We've updated our reliability stats for the Sonic to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. Plus we've added reliability trends graphs. These indicate how a model's reliability has changed as it has aged, and how different model years performed when the same age.
Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2013 Sonic: 69, high--many reports of coolant leaks lately, especially for the 1.4T's water pump
2012 Sonic: 51, moderate
We'll have further updates in May and in August. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

What are your data sources? Are you using any dealer/warranty repair statistics, or are you only using owner feedback? If you're only using feedback from owners, specifically dissatisfied owners, you're results will be skewed and not representative of actual maintenance/repair work. I would love to hear your explanation...
Data are from owners, but not specifically dissatisfied ones. Everyone KNOWS that only dissatisfied owners participate in car reliability surveys, yet somehow the resulting stats don't back this up. We have some cars with dozens of "no repair" responses and few or even no "repair" responses.
This could be because we collect data quarter by quarter going forward, rather than a single time retrospectively like other surveys.
We don't have enough participants to split the stats by engine or transmission. With the 2013 it does look like the 1.4T might have a common problem with leaking water pumps.
To drill down further we need more participants.

We'll have updated stats for the 2012 and 2013 soon. For the 2014 and 2015 we continue to need more people signed up to provide even initial stats. And if we had more 2012s and 2013s, we could do things like compare reliability for the two engines.

I've owned over 10 cars in my life and the 2012 Sonic has been the best car I've ever had! Very few/minor problems and the warranty covered them. I would definitely buy one again! :banana:

:banana:Just hit 93,000 on my 2013 LTZ 1.4 Turbo. It has been a fun and solid car. Only repair was just last week. Left front wheel bearing needed to be replaced, but I decided to replace both of them. Usually when one goes, the other is right behind it. That is an expected repair at that mileage.
