99% sure the overflow cap is the rad cap........
Yup
Not to mention the overflow tank is vented so you may smell it from time to time.
I noticed a sweet smell when wiping down my car after washing it. The smell was coming from the front grill area. I popped the hood and could smell a sweet coolant -like smell in the engine compartment. I looked at the coolant reservoir and made note of the level of coolant. It was not low. The smell appears to be coming from the accessory side of the engine where the water pump is. It is only noticeable when the engine is hot.
I park in a garage and have no leaks on the floor.I am going to keep and eye on things for awhile as I have not seen any real remedies for any kind of coolant smell. I wonder if many of these cases of people smelling coolant is the result of air from the engine compartment entering the car from the fresh air intake. I also wonder if some of the materials used in building the car give off a coolant-like smell when they get hot.
I would have to say if a heater core leaks - even a pinhole leak, you would have that all too familiar fogging of the inner windshield. Time will tell
Mine needed a water pump, and the dealer happily took care of it. They've been great. I haven't crawled under it to check things out, but I'm not smelling coolant and it's not leaving puddles in the driveway anymore so I hope it's fixed.
That said, it was kinda concerning that while my car is in for a cooling system issue that I get another GM 1.4 equipped vehicle to drive (from a rental agency) that reeked of coolant and had an almost empty surge tank. What are the odds?![]()
Well, my car is back from the dealer.
The coolant is still low, they said it's fine.
I still smell coolant, they claim to only be able to smell my air freshener. They also suggested I'm just smelling coolant from other cars around me on the road.
They wasted a quarter tank of gas letting it idle "for an hour or so" while they tried to smell the coolant.
Off to find a new dealer! Hurrah!
