That page seems to indicate the 2012 1.4L Turbo in the Sonic has DI?

Oh, I'm sure we are ALL aware that the 2012 Sonic is not direct injected, it just seems to indicate otherwise. Would be neat though.

A) Wouldn't be the first time. I suspect direct injection was on the table late in the game, but removed for cost.

B) It would seem that direct injection is on the table for the future Ecotec engines.

I'm confused again.? Dose DI not use an injector or what. All the DI cars I've seen still have them. I did some feeling around and it seems my injectors plug in threw the intake but are much longer than that of any other car I've seen.

DI has injectors... they *are longer than other injectors, but their length is concealed by the fact that they go directly into the combustion chamber.

Early GM Media publicity releases indicated the 1.4t would be DI. We know now that turned out to be inaccurate. GM engineers have said cost was the reason for not going to DI. It is anticipated that DI is in the 1.4t future, but I do not believe it would be a mid-year introduction.

All this was months ago and long before the new 1.6t DI was announced.

Why would they put in print on their sales website that it is.......... if it isn't...........lol. Their specs page for the 1.4 and 1.8 sure as hell says DI for the 1.4.

Both engines 1.8L and 1.4L for the Sonic North American Market are port injected engines. This may be different for Overseas application, Both engines aim the injector at the Intake valve for greater atomization.

DI Injectors are usually have steel housings except for there electrical connector, Port Injectors are usually plastic housings.

Also should be noted that the Family 0 engines (like the 1.4) have never been DI anywhere in the world during their entire production, and are supposed to be replaced with a new generation of engines within the next few years. Would it really be cost effective to make that drastic of a change to an engine with that limited of a life span?

Engineering for a DI 1.4t is done, part of the reason early GM media releases referred to it being DI. I am not sure the 1.8 is a member of the same engine family and I am sure the engine family it is a member of is being replaced in a few years. The goal for the 1.4t was 40mpg epa certification and once GM realized that goal could be met without DI, there was no current need to continue in that direction. But tomorrow with changing mpg goals I fully expect the 1.4t to have DI, in part because the engineering work is basically done.
