Engine oil

I am old school , conventional oil and change it & the filter at 3,000 miles .

From what I read , the 2015 Sonic 1.8l automatic 4dr sedan requires Dexos rated oil . Apparently this means synthetic blend or pure synthetic ?

And I guess I just need to watch the oil change indicator to determine the oil change interval ?

I have a feeling , if it gets to around 6,000 miles , I am going to have the itch to change oil .

I ordered some GM oil filters from RockAuto.com . Next choice is what kind of oil ? Any large real world differences between blend and full synthetic oil ? Any large real world differences between the brands of full synthetic ?

I have to agree...I would be itching to change the oil by 4000 miles!

Watched a video on synthetic blends . Looks like I will probably going with full synthetic . Leaning towards Mobil 1 , although I have had good luck , for years , Quaker State .

Looking on the net , Wally World seems to have it for about $ 24 for 5 quarts or about $ 28 for extended performance .

I suspect I will go for the $ 24 full synthetic Mobil 1 .

I just ordered 4 GM / Delco filters from RockAuto.com .

Use M1 5w-30 and a good filter, change every 5k for the 1.4T.

M1 Ext Perf has an extra add pack that will hold up to the elevated engine operating temps that GM is now utilizing. It will also help with coking in the oil inlet line to the turbo with heat and detergent add packs that it contains.

I do not have a turbo .

I ordered the " standard " GM / Delco filter PF2257G / 55594651 from RockAuto . They are tiny / dinky little things .

Any one else have a suggestion for a better brand ?

I use the same oil in my 1.8. It operates at the same temps as the 1.4. GM is operating this engines at higher temps to push efficiency to squeak a little more MPGs out for CAFE standards.

I would still recommend the same oils for similar reasons in both engines.

Also, I would not reduce oil change intervals to below 5,000 miles. Both of the oils that I recommended above can easily be used to 10,000 with little change in oil characteristics.

To simplify maintenance on my two Sonics; I change oil and filter at 5,000 miles, regardless of what the oil life monitor recommends.
I use the OEM AC Delco filter, purchased at my local Farm & Fleet store.
For oil, I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30, from a local Walmart.

I also use the same products on my 2004 GTO; my 2009 Silverado; and my 2011 Equinox. Because of the limited mileage I put on these vehicles, they get changed annually.

I am not aware of any one that makes a "better" filter for this application. I do know that there have been several documented catastrophic failures by aftermarket versions.

I sell ACDelco, Motorcraft, Mopar, WIX (A line), WIX (B line) and other brands of filters (along with many other products) to new car dealers, used car dealers, fleets and independent repair shops.

My reputable shops won't use an aftermarket 2257G version.

Oil discussion threads will never agree.

To be honest, run anything Dexos and change every 5k miles, and you'll be just fine.

I have a 1.4T, but run Mobil 1 extended performance and change my oil when the OLM gets down to around 10%. For me, due to no short trips this is usually around 9K or 10K miles.

Personally, I don't get an itch to do unnecessary work but to be honest if it's going to make you worry that's unhealthy and it's probably better to do what makes you happy.

Plenty of people go very long on oil changes. Modern engines run much cleaner than carburetor ones especially on startup and modern oils are completely different than the old stuff. To be honest, 3K even on conventional oil in a modern engine is wasteful, I'd still go 5K.

I bought Delco oil filters from RockAuto , a 5 quart jug of Mobile 1 full synthetic , a gallon of " GM " specification antifreeze and a jug of windshield wiper fluid at Wally World . Not time to change anything yet , but I have it on hand .

My wife has been getting the oil changed at one of the oil change places , on our previous cars . I figure , if I do it myself , it will make up for the higher cost of the synthetic oil .

From what I can tell , there are not any grease zirts to grease on the suspension ? But If I locate any , I have a grease gun .

Never know when you are going to have a leak . Bust a hose .

Also , I read the thermostat is prone to failure ? If so , there will be coolant lost , replacing it .

I do not know how important it is to use the " GM " spec antifreeze . Or if it is OK to use the antifreeze that says it is OK for all cars ?

I saw the GM stuff not too far from the oil , at Wally World . Figured , why not .

The windshield washer fluid is just a consumable .
