Finally time to install intake

The beep you hear in the ZZP intake drive video is my Ultragauge detecting a pending code for fuel system running too lean but after messing around a bit with it and clearing the codes it is gone and hasn't come back in a little over 100 miles of driving.


And for those curious, I used my Go Pro Ghetto Edition to take the videos. A Canon T2i in that pocket thing of top of the dash with some automotive masking tape to make sure it didn't fall

I am still probably going to borrow my buddy's Go Pro but I can't justify $200 for something that I would use maybe once or twice a year. Plus it's hard to justify a $200 camera to my wife when I paid $800 for my T2i

Why is it that you hear the BOV with the aftermarket intake and not the stock one?

I've seen the same thing on multiple forced induction cars. The stock airboxes do a lot to mute the sound of the bypass valve. Tend to have lots of piping, and I've even seen them with resonators built into them. The after market intakes are metal tubing with a very straight shot to the turbo (though usually by way of a MAF) with a filter on the end. So the sound of the bypass valve can easily get out of the aftermarket intake compared to the stock airbox style.

Also, i made the camera joke earlier, but in all seriousness, thanks for doing this high quality write up RockTheShazbot. Well done with before and after, and taking video/audio so it's not just us reading about your impressions. Good stuff.

Thats what I was thinking. The sound alone is worth it, and if you get a little power gain thats like a bonus. I love the sound of this intake and BOV. Its hard to believe that a motor with a smaller displacement that a 2 liter of pepsi sounds so throaty.

For those guys only looking to get the sound of an intake (being able to maybe hear your turbo spooling, and then hearing the bypass valve), try this FREE mod. I'm going to try it maybe tonight on my Sonic so i can verify I'm not spreading misinformation to you guys.

You should be able to take the top off of your airbox, and i'd recomend maybe some duct tape or something to hold down the filter. I tested this on my other car when it was stock. Stock i could not hear the turbo/bypass valve, and with the top of the airbox removed i could hear the spool and bypass valve plain as day. If you want to keep it that way, maybe you could make some custom brackets for holding the filter in place so its not a DSM ghetto Home Depot mod with duct tape.

If all you want is the sound, this will probabley work; for free

disclaimer: I've opened my hood once. I don't know how the intake system is even setup on our cars. I'm assuming an airbox with the panel filter in it. The airbox likely has some sort of snorkel pulling air from a colder location.

Ok, I just looked at some photos from the how to install ZZP intake thread. Apparently the design of our stock intake is the same exact concept to what i described, but it's upside down. Meaning the "top" of the airbox i mentioned above is also the inlet to the turbo.

I'll definitely look into this tonight. Likely the concept will still work, but you'll be removing the bottom of the airbox; and absolutely need to secure the filter in place. Common sense is telling me the bottom of the airbox is probably also the mounting bracket for the airbox to stay in place.

I think I'll temporarily take the bottom off it, as a proof of concept test (that removing it will allow you to hear the spool/BPV), and if that's the case, the best course of action would be modifying the bottom of the airbox, rather than removing it. Take a dremel to it, putting a big square hole in the middle, but maintaining the brackets for mounting, and the edges to secure the panel filter.

I'll dig in later I'm "working" right now

Paddy-I thought about doing the same thing. Worked on my 1st gen neon, but I also had a ram air scoop ducted to the cutout in the airbox. I never removed the resonator, and still had a better sounding intake and more power gain than the guys who bought off the shelf. I want to do that with the sonic, but I havent had a chance to yet. Let us know how it comes out, and post a sound clip if possible.
