Hi, I have Sonic LT 2013. I was out of town for 4 days (from Wed -Sat) last week. My neighborhood is not very safe. I parked my car on my apartment parking.
When I checked my car last Sun morning, I found my my gas tank lid was opened (both outside and inside lid). I don't know how long this state has been. My tank was full before I left. I suppose someone tried to steal my gas from my tank. The interesting thing is that my gas doesn't lose much (< 1 Gallon). I am worried.
1>How fast does gas vaporize? If just some kids did this (they don't steal gas), it shouldn't be opened long time ago? right? If they open Wed, all gas should vaporize by Sun morning?
2>Another possibility? They stole all my gas or half of them and refilled my tank with water. So, I didn't see a lot of gas missing, when I checked the meter. Is this possible? I drove my car several blocks for testing. I didn't find it is usual. I hear the engine gives heavy sound. I'm not a car expert and I might be paranoid.
3>I google this on internet. Someone said this happened to their cars. Some punks filled sugars in it. They didn't realize it at the beginning. Eventually, it costs them thousands of dollars to fix this problem after drive several months.
4> I am still in 3 years warranty and I have full insurance. Should I drive to Chevy store and ask them to have a look? If I want to do this, what should I tell them. What should I ask them to check? They have 27 points checking and will this detect problems? If I say I want to pump all my old gas and refill new gas, will they do this for me. If they know someone vandalized my car, the official warranty might not cover this. Should I contact my insurance company first and ask them to cover? How should I talk to them?
5> Is it possible the lid pops up by itself? I filled a full tank of gas before I left. I screwed the lid tightly. Is it possible the hot weather makes the gas inflate and pop the lid?
