What oil are the dealers running and are you? Mobil1 i know but Synthetic, Blend, or Conventional? this is my first car made in the past decade. Always ran full synthetic with older cars but never went back to conventional after since mechanics have told me that will cause oil to get into the pistons, not sure how true this is.

Regarding changing from synthetic to conventional oil. I had a 95 Jeep since new and from 5,000 to about 60,000 miles, I ran Amsoil synthetic. After that, I ran conventional oil. Several years later, I donated the Jeep to a charity with about 250,000 on the odometer. It never burned a drop of oil. Changing to conventional sure didn't hurt that engine. With the synthetic, I changed about every 10,000 miles. With the conventional, every 5,000.

I JUST got my free oil change done and have yet to check my engine bay. 0_o
lol I'm gonna check first thing tomorrow now.

On a side note, when I got my car back from the oil change, and airbag recall fix (they also said that there was some sort of fuel line recall or something like that), I noticed that they reset my computer, so my odometer started reading in km instead of mi. It didn't take too long to switch everything back, but it was still kind of annoying. My tune was untouched though so so far so good.

I did my first oil change over the weekend and I don't have a belly pan. 1.4 ltz hatch built in February 12 . Anybody else come across this?

As of January 1, 2012, the belly pans are no longer being put on any Sonics.

Got the original oil out of my baby at 1500 and now she's bathing in Mobil 1 synthetic.

I did the first oil changes on both of our Sonics last evening. I used AC Delco filters, and Mobil 1 5W-30 extended performance Dexos 1 certified oil.
They both have about 1500 miles on them, and I wanted to get the initial fill replaced. The 1.8 engine is the easier to change oil on; the belly cover doesn't need to come off, and the filter is easier to access. The 1.4 engine requires the belly cover to be removed, and to make the filter access easier, the charge air tube that goes to the throttle body, needs to be disconnected and pushed aside. I used Rhino ramps to elevate the cars for working clearance. I reset the oil life monitors, and checked for leaks.

If this is something you wish to DIY, be sure to log your service, and keep your receipts, just in case!

My 1.4L Sonic doesn't have a cover that blocks the oil pan!
When I first bought it, I put it up on ramps and photographed/video'd under the hood and underneath the car. I noticed two empty holes for screws, but no other obvious attachement points, so I was relieved that my Sonic didn't have the belly pan like my Fiat and Honda Civic do, and therefore the oil would be easier to change.

Guess I'd better look into this!

i changed my oil after 526 miles, takes 500 miles according to the owners manual on the 1.4 turbo to break in, got those metal shavings out as soon as possible :banana:

using Valvoline syntec 5-30w, registered for the 300k mile guaranty...since i plan on driving this into the ground lol
