For starters I have a 2015 sonic hatchback 1.4 turbo. I've had a CAI, ZZP pcv bypass kit and ZZP ported intake installed for about a year with no issues during that time. Factory Tune.
I found an oil leak coming from the oil cooler. I've had an unused Dorman turbo assembly sitting in my garage for 2 years waiting for a good time to install it and what better time then now. So, I had the World class gm tech at my dealer install the turbo and oil cooler along with new pipes, seals and gaskets 3 weeks ago. 3 days after the install I had to accelerate hard to get around someone and the car hesitated badly but quickly recovered and zoomed off. The following morning on the way to work I had to accelerate to get onto the Interstate and the CEL popped on. Used Torque to check the code and it's a P0299. The technician said it could be a boost leak coming from the Intercooler and/or charge pipes. I didn't disagree and already planned on upgrading to the ZZP intercooler kit eventually. He is extremely knowledgeable with all GM vehicles, but with the mods on my vehicle he is a little apprehensive giving me any more recommendations as he doesn't want me to waste any money.
Fast forward a bit....2 days ago I installed the ZZP intercooler kit with charge pipes. The charge pipe going from the turbo to the intercooler was caked in oil residue at the intercooler connection. Car drove fine for a day, but still felt a little off. Today leaving work and accelerating to get onto the highway the car got real sluggish upon accelerating hard then proceeded to lack acceleration the whole ride home. No CEL, but Torque app is showing a pending P0299 code.
There is def something weird going on and it all started after installing the Dorman turbo. Should I suspect this is a bad turbo?
Could messing with the wastegate preload remedy this?
Will the installed mods mess with the preload amount needed?
Whats the best way to determine if there is a boost leak?
Thanks in advance
