How do I find a part, to know what it does??

Hi!

I actually signed up, w/this forum, to figure out how to help my car.

However, a piece fell off....today! My dealer's service isn't open today. My husband is using my car for work. He thought, he had broken it. I found a "shield" *of some kind hanging off, in front of the back left tire. Pulled right off. Sent him back to work. I don't need the part, I can fix it. I just want to know what it does.

NOW, I want to know what it is! I've tried looking up all the #'s I find....Don't know what it is, or what it does! I think he's safe. It's just bothering me that I can't find the part. Let alone, Gm's cust. service stinks. They keep sending me to California voice mails. And, when I called the dealership they gave me the # for .......
.....their operator kept sending me to voice mails.

I'm not inept. Just wondering how to find this part:

SHIELD ASM-U/B #4 CR SILL

I keep being sent to ads on google. I just want to know. I'm quite handy!

$5.52 at www.cheapestgmparts.com which is run by Ballas Buick in Toledo. Attached diagram shows it as an air deflector. Can't see too much in the diagram, but it might cover some wiring or the fuel lines - just guessing. It probably should be replaced since its so cheap.

BTW, GM customer service has zero technical knowledge.

OK, looking at a larger version of the diagram, the fuel lines are on the other side of the car...

Thanks! It isn't broken, so I should be able to get the bolts out & reattach it.
