Intake camshaft

Im having a brain fart at the moment. How many intake cams does a dohc engine have??? Ex. The new regal gs 2.0 turbo???

A Dohc 4 cylinder has 2 cams. One Intake. One exhaust.

A DOHC has 2 cams per bank of cylinders. So a 4cyl would have 1 intake cam and 1 exhaust cam.
A V8 would have 2 intake cams and 2 exhaust, one each per bank of cylinders.

A V-6 is much like a V-8 with shorter cams (-1 cylinder per side).

True, it is a exception.


I do like OHC. My Mercedes diesel is a sohc, Lincoln is a Dohc, Honda is a sohc.

a VR6 is a 15* V6. From what I recall it uses one intake and one exhaust cam since it only has one head.

Its damn near an inline 6, but they did give it a slight angle so I guess it would be a V6.

I have heard good and bad. The W8, W12, and W16 engines are based on the same concept.

I owned two different VR6 cars - definitely an interesting engine. Definitely one of the best sounding engines while you're inside the car. Sounds like a little V8 with plenty of growl.
The 15 degree V was chosen to allow VW to fit a v6 in the same spot as a 4 cyl - which saved tons of money in not having to redesign the structure for crash safety / intrusion.

The head was a cross flow design, so one bank's intake runners were longer than the other, plus, the intake charge of one bank gets heated up crossing the other bank's combustion chambers. The result is significantly different IMEP values between banks. So much, in fact, that they had to retard spark on half of the engine to get it to run smooth!
