I've been having an issue for the past few weeks with my Sonic (1.4T, 6MT hatch).
I have an intermittent ticking noise - probably about 10-20% of the total drive time) - that seems to come and go randomly. It varies with engine speed. When the ticking is loudest, it seems to effect the car's performance a lot; the engine will sometimes hold back or stutter when accelerating. I've been checking the engine codes fairly often while driving, and I've noticed a 'pending' P0324 (knock control system error) that comes up while it's ticking, but is never active for long enough to actually become an 'active' fault code.
I've been back to my mechanic a few times, and he says it's probably just sticky lifters and will clear up in time. He recommended an oil additive to break up deposits in the engine, but that hasn't had any effect.
Has anyone else had this problem or something similar? It's really odd, because when the car isn't ticking, it's running absolutely perfect - completely smooth, tons of power, awesome gas mileage. The car is completely stock, except for the PCV fix kit (installed about 8 months ago).
I always run 91 or 93 octane in the car, and use the recommended Top Tier fuels most of the time (there aren't too many stations that have top-tier premium gas in my area)
