Is the Sonic the New J-Body?

Thanks to Memphis for the heads up that Sonic cars are appearing in dealer inventories. One thing I noticed as a flipped through the cars appeared is that the VIN is showing J in the fourth spot, which is used to show the body series.

I admit being partial to the J series, having owned four over the course of the years. The first was the Pontiac J-2000, IIRC the next year it was renamed Sunbird or Sunfire or some such. I put 85,000 miles on it in two years, organizing a brand new statewide labor union representing State of Michigan employees.

Careful LaborSmith. We got a lotta anti-labor types on this board. They have urged that Asians immigrate to the U.S. to assemble automobiles. Regarding the "J," I had a Sunfire with 125,000 miles. Sold it to a girlfriend. Then, a few years later, she sold it to my new girlfriend. The Red Sunfire kept on going until new girlfriend's father (an old guy) totalled it making a stupid left turn at night without signaling. Labor Organizing. It be a tough job!

So does this mean that the Sonic follows the Cobalt, Cavalier, Chevette line?

No to Cobalt as the Cobalt=A Vehicle Line
No to Chevette as the Chevette=T Vehicle Line
Yes to Cavalier (In My Opinion) as all three generations=C Vehicle Line
If I am wrong I am sure a GM spokesperson will let us know.

^^ Good topic. I remember the Spectrum following the Chevette (as I had both of those when I was younger) Spectrum was based from the European Chevette. Not sure how the cavalier was developed. Wasn't the cobalt a freshened cavalier? Ill research this at some point..
