Jerking

With my 5spd, when I am in 1st gear driving in a parking lot and I let off the gas, the car jerks slightly. When slowly letting off the gas, it does not jerk. What causes this? Those of you with other cars in manual, is this specific to the Sonic or all cars with manual transmissions.

All cars with a manual do this. The lower the gear, the more sensitive the car is to changes in throttle opening, transitions of DFCO engaging, etc, engine braking, etc.

The lower the gear, the greater torque multiplication. Changes in torque applied is basically what you're feeling, while the causes are different.

What Ahtoxa said. The higher the gear the smoother the car will feel when making changes in throttle position.

Mine did this a bit in manual mode as I have an auto. If you pull the mount, the bushing is VERY soft.... If your willing, buy a new (or used for half the price) TTR Trans mount and it should help alleviate that annoyance

Thanks for all the answers. I really like driving a manual as it is a lot more fun. I also feel you get more power out of the engine. There is a noticable difference in power between my auto 1.8L and manual 1.8L.

The one thing I dislike about a manual is the jerky feeling in the lower gears. I think the Sonic transmission is jerkier than others as I don't remember the other manual cars I've driven to be this jerky.

Maybe a long shot, but have you tried checking the spark plug gap? For me it made a noticeable difference in how mine felt in lower gears after I fixed it. It's still not fun to putt arount in first, but it feels a bit smoother when working the gas.
