The main reason I bought the Sonic was its looks. I'm from the generation that had the 84 GTI and 86 Omni GLH..and I wanted those! (Had an 84 GTI, POS! and I bought a GLH Turbo without using my brain as it had a blown engine and was rusting out)...

So the Sonic and the Focus are the only cars that fit that criteria (the Fiesta to some extent, but no back seat room at all).. and the Focus ST is out of my cost range.

The RS Sonic isn't enough oomph to make the leap to it IMHO.

Chevy has the most unique opportunity right now to make a Sonic SS, call it the Super Sonic and I'm there, make it $23K or less and I'm there! Make it a 1.8T or 2.0T and I'm there, make it with REAL LEATHER, a redesigned instrument pod with actual data you can use and I'm there, sports exhaust, slightly lower, wider wheels, body kit (if tasteful), and I'm there!

Even just the budget tune.. I yearn daily for something that is truly fast, but then I get behind the wheel of my Sonic and am satisfied for now. My car has been a SEG-inducing very lightly modified piece of machinery for almost a year. The tune NEVER gets old.

what did you have?
Before this I had a 2004 Civic Si. 160hP, much peppier, but not really "faster"... would have kept it, but no heated seats and cramped seats (sucked with a winter coat on).. 28mpg with my lead foot..

86 GTi with a 1.8t swap, 92 GTi 16v and an 03 SVT Focus with the EAP package. The 86 is an unfair comparison because it was a 400 hp monster in a 1800 lbs wrapper. The 92 was a just a blast to drive and would probably give the Sonic a run for its money in a straight line. It would walk it in the twistys. My SVT was probably the best DD I ever owned. It had full bolt ons and a tune. EAP package gave it HID headlights, different wheels, and a full black leather interior with recaro seats. Very underrated car because it had a tall first gear which hurt it off the line, but kept you in the powerband on the track. It also handled like it was on rails. The Sonic lacks the something special that these three cars had.

I still see SVT's out there... I had heard about the tall gearing.. The '03's is when Ford starting hitting quality goals and they became really reliable.

My 84 GTI wouldn't outrun a Yaris today...very peppy, but no top end..

The Si was such a revver, so easy to scoot in and out of traffic..

The Sonic just needs that 1.8 turbocharged with 200hp min (not above 220 I'd say, too much and it's gonna wanna torque steer)... a little better clutch let up and a better center console/arm rest. Make the instrument panel a little more serious with real info like temp and boost... and REAR FREAKING DISC's!!

Idk, I've put a decent amount of money into my sonic and its pretty effing fast. I wake up looking forward to drive it everyday. It walks on a good amount of cars. Ill have to get some video of the races. Maybe tonight.

Your 84 was either a 1.8 sohc 8v or a 1.8 dohc 16v. The 92 had the 2.0 dohc 16v.

How did the suggestion of a Corvette up along with all the other cars not even in the same category?? lol If cars like the ones mentioned were even an option how the hell did you end up with a Sonic?
