Leaking coolant??

Hey all, I haven’t posted much on here since getting my car because it hasn’t given me any issues in the nearly 7 years I’ve owned it. However, I noticed my temp gauge going off one day which I though was unusual. I checked my coolant level and noticed it was nearly empty. I filled it up, and then after driving it home, it was empty again the next day. I checked both hoses coming off for cracks, as well as looked around the engine bay to see if I could see the leak, but couldn’t find anything. That’s when I noticed that something on the left side of my engine had a lot of build up around it. It looks like grease from oil, I was just wondering if it is the source of my coolant leak, or if it’s a different problem entirely. It looks as if it’s coming from a pipe connected straight to the engine (possibly turbo or exhaust manifold?) Thanks for the help, and sorry if I'm being unclear, I can try to take better pictures or a video.

On that side would be the thermostat housing (top side of the waterpump as well that it connects to)

Other known areas it will develop a leak are the underside of the surge over flow tank starts cracking, the water outlet on the right side of the engine (four hoses go to and from it, one to the turbo, one to the radiator, small one from the surge tank and one back to the heatercore at the firewall) also the t-fitting on the back left side of the engine..

Thanks for the quick reply and pertaining docs!! That’s tremendous help, based on that it seems my thermostat has bit the dust. I’m still curious as to what is leaking from it to cause the greasy build up around it. It’s almost like oil and not coolant. Good to know that’s what needs replacing though. I checked the underside of the surge tank and there appears to be a very small crack, however I don’t notice a leak coming from it when I fill the surge tank, and it doesn’t seem greasy to the touch.

Oil leaks in that area are likely either from the valvecover or the cam actuator seals just around the corner.

I don’t want to hijack someone’s thread but do you know the part number for that T-fitting near the back of the motor? Mine is leaking and I can’t for the life of me find the GM replacement part for it.

Not sure, Ill see if i can find it.. but i know you can find a brass t-fitting to replace it at a hardware store.
