I too thought that discs would be cheaper than drums, but my engineer buddy was kind enough to enlighten me.
It turns out, that the cost of material is actually a very very small fraction of the overall cost of anything.
The costs buildup in machining and design.
Having one mold to make the actually drum part, although it uses quite a bit more metal than a disc, is actually monumentally cheaper than having to make the molds for the caliper, caliper brackets, install the piston, etc.
