Manual Clicking/Popping

Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you have an issue where the manual feels like it is kind of popping in place and makes what I guess is best described as a clicking/popping sound? It doesn't happen all the time and it seems like it generally can happen in almost any gear but I noticed it mostly between gears 2-5. I've driven a lot of manuals and I've never really noticed thing type of sound/feeling when shifting into gear.

It might just be the manual is really notchy but I want to make sure its just not mine.

Mine seems to do this ever since it got cold or something like it I would say notchy best describes it. It only really seems to do it when it is really cold for me and in the upshift to 2nd and 3rd. It seems like the shift cables may be binding I was gonna try the shifter cable aligning procedure eventually and see if that helps

Is there any actual sound? I know my LT feels like it grabs onto something and then it goes into gear. That's why I always slam it. Especially into second for some reason it seems to not want to go straight down into second it goes down a certain amount and then it kind of wants to curve to the right. No clue as to why.

I should also mention, do not slam it into gear :| If you do it nice and careful it will go in, you won't feel nearly as cool but you won't end up stranded because you thought you broke something because your shifter went limp. Like I did. If your shifter does go limp; pop out the console and push the clip in and you're good to go though!

Mine doesn't make any real sound it's more of a feel like a faint crunch. If you ever shifted without pushing the clutch beyond the disengagement point and tried to put it in second kinda like that. I know if I shift slowly and let the revs come down some the shift engagement is a lot smoother

I wouldn't consider it really cold here, maybe 50-65 degrees. If its due to cold I can't imagine how bad it would be in an actual cold climate.

I guess it could be described as a faint crunch, its kind of hard to explain the sound. It doesn't also has some physical feeling to it as well, its just not a sound. Like most thing, it didn't bother me at first but now its a bit annoying.. It takes away from the driving experience.

mine only does it when the car is cold . im assuming it is from the cold tranny fluid , once it warms up the nothchy-ness goes away . and it pretty much takes the same amount of time to warm up in the summer and winter . if its -40c then it takes a minute or 2 longer .

Can you record it? I know that sometimes when I try to put the car into a gear it doesn't want to go in. Clutch in while moving, or car off clutch or not it sometimes refuses to go into a gear unless it goes into a different one first.

mine sometimes does that but i just clutch in for a second time and its smooth. i used to only double clutch while down shifting but i find my self almost doing it almost everytime i go into 1st or 2nd. the transmission seems to like it when i do that .

That's also another way to do it. Or you could just force it into gear, it doesn't grind just really annoying to slam it in.

Second gear grind issue... and crunchy third. Very common with this car and a few threads on the subject. I took mine to the dealer and they just brushed it off. They did mentioned while shifting into second that you have to throw it to the right a tad with these cars and not straight back... but that has never helped imo...
A few posts I've read mentioned to switch your tran fluid to GM Syncromesh - Friction Modified.
Haven't tried it yet though. Probably next year I will.

I have First Gear Shudder if I am not super smooth with my throttle movements.

I have Second Gear Grind if I revv first gear over 3K before shifting.

I have Third Gear Crunch if I don't give the synchros enough time to compensate from second by leaving the stick in the center 'neutral' position.

I have Fourth Gear Whine, which gets louder the closer I am to 60MPH.


I wouldn't trade my manual transmission for an auto even at this point. :banana:
