My tailight tint is TOO DARK!!

I pulled up behind a Camaro RS the other day and in bright daylight I could not see his brake lights until I was within 10 feet behind him coming to a stop.

Most people seem to think that the only things important are what they can see. Apparently, if you can't see it, it won't hurt you!

The same ideology goes for rear view and side mirrors. >.>

I tinted only the backup lights, leaving anything red, red, but anything clear, black.

The OP's complaint seemed to be specifically about his backups, though, a pedestrian could not see them. I really haven't had that happen to me at all, the tint makes them look black when not lit but they still light up just as much as ever as far as I can tell.

If I had it to do over, though, I would still go with a film instead of a spray, seems like it would be much easier to remove and would guarantee a single level of tint, while it is easy to screw up with spray and get things uneven. Also, I suspect there's less work involved in trimming it to fit where you want (like with me, leaving all the red untinted) than there was in doing that same trim job with masking tape. I guess until I try it, though, I won't be really able to compare jobs.

I ended up plastidiping my taillights. they are still visible during the day, enough to notice i'm steping on the breaks/turning/backing up but still very good at night

I think that's idiotic, if you ask me. No way in hell would I want to reduce my visibility to others in a world of people texting and generally not paying attention behind the wheel. Often enough a change in peripheral vision is the only thing getting their attention. Remove that by them not seeing the lights come on and you're asking to get rear ended.

More so, you may be held liable if your brake lights did not meet DOT requirements, which heavily tinted lights surely do not. Not worth the hassle.

100% agreement with you. If anything, I want my BRAKE lights BRIGHTER. So bright, that anyone behind me sees the bright light and has to put down their phone and do what they should be doing... PAY ATTENTION.

I've seen numerous cars running around at night with tail lights so dim, you cannot tell if the car even has their lights on.
