need oil filter bypass valve

2014 Sonic 1.4L Turbo RS
I changed oil today and had a very hard time getting the filter out. I think it was the wrong filter as it had swelled up and I had to unscrew the plastic device that holds the filter centered and it has the filter bypass valve in the end of it.

In the process of getting it out I broke the tip off the bypass valve itself. This piece screws into the bottom of the filter canister which is part of the oil cooler.

I need just the center piece with the bypass valve, but dealer parts man say it comes as a unit, cooler, filter housing bypass valve threaded cap, etc.

Does anyone know of a way to buy just the center piece that holds the filter?

Gms part # for the whole cooler is 55566784 Eng. Oil Cooler.

The bypass valve insert or "stalk" is available and . . * IF* your Sonic has the Hengst oil filter housing.
It would be the same as the Chevy Colorado Hengst oil filter housing.

The part is GM 12696079 IF . . . your Sonic 1.4L has the Hengst brand oil filter adapter housing.

Then you apparently to not have the Hengst brand oil filter cooler housing.
GM used two different brands for these in both Sonic and Chevy Cruze.

Hengst vs UFI. GM fucked this up. They used two types. The Hengst will be the most common. It is on my 2019. Check the cap and the metal housing for the logos. I’m guessing they made this change not because UFI was better but their may have been a shortage during production. Mechanics are messing up all across the world on this. Sometimes it results in damage sometimes it dosent. Those that need a UFI filter are probably spending a bit more as it has a bypass valve and options are limited. Hengst filters are just media the actual valve is built into the filter housing.

Also I swear by Penzoil 5W-30 Platnium. I have used it ever since it came out and it constantly beats Mobil 1.

As far as oil filters I usually tell people to stick to the AC Delco (GM) brand. Same thing on BMWs and Minis the manufacturer is always the way to go. Fram Ultra Synthetic is pretty cheap although uses synthetic material and uses some metal to keep the pleats from crushing under pressure if your looking for the one stop shop at Walmart and a decent filter. If you need a UFI filter it’s probably dealer or AutoZone.

***Side Note: I would not go off the cap alone when changing the filter as I’ll bet these caps interchange pretty easy and I’m sure a Mechanic has busted one and replaced one. Double check the housing as well.

Another reason why you don’t bring a car to Jiffy Lube.

I don't consider that GM eff'd up in using two filter housings. See Post # 4 above in this thread.

This happens to other automotive makers as well when one supplier fails to provide or becomes unreliable for one reason or another.

Parts supplies change for one reason or another, so what is a car or truck maker supposed to do? . .. . hold up production for an oil filter housing??
This same Hengst/UFI issue exists on a few other GM vehicles like my 2017 Colorado truck and Chevy Cruze. Since 2017 it appears GM has continued to use Hengst which to me seems a better quality housing and uses filters that are more readily available signaling that perhaps UTI turned out to be an unreliable supplier.

Puzzled by that. Thought you said it had "screw on threads" ? If it is Hengst, then it should just have two tabs on the bottom end and snap into place.

Wiggle it around and pull it out . . .. take a couple of pictures and post them here. The we will be on the same page.

I can't take pictures as it is back together with a screw in the top of the bypass valve. I want to get a new one so it can be replaced next oil change.

Apologies for slowness and plodding along through this. I'm +70 years old and have the grand kids here . . . Anyway, I'm thinking somewhere along the line that oil cooler T-stat housing may have been replaced with an aftermarket replacement. Which would have different parts. But. . . who knows?

I have the Hengst like on the left also . . and mine has the kind of bypass stalk shown below.

The one on the left below is the original part. The one on there right is the updated part and has larger tabs to hold it in place than the original. Also no point on the end of the bypass valve at the top.

Well, thank you for the excellent information! But now I'm a bit confused.

Could someone have put a black Hengst cap on an UFI housing?

Edited to add; I just had my grandson stop by so I could double check. It is a Hengst housing and a Hengst cap. And it has a screw in bypass.

reviving an old thread because I’m cranky… I just got a 2015 Sonic and going through the usual stuff. Got to the oil change and found someone in the past has put the wrong filter in. This car has the Hengst housing, they used UFI. The valve is destroyed and thankfully the springs and plastic pieces didn’t make their way out of the housing and destroy the engine. you would think the person putting the cap back on would hear the crunching of cheap plastic breaking and then question what’s happening. For reference my valve post/stalk is threaded as well. So annoying.

I'm glad you revived this thread. I am now wondering if my previous shop may have put in the wrong filter. I will have to take a look at it myself.
