We picked up a 2012 Sonic 2 weeks ago, sticker was just over $17g and they had it on for under $12, low finance rate (2.9%) and payments (though they are for 84 months - too long, but we can pay it off faster if needed/wanted), no option car, i.e. no air, no cruise. Good commuter...so I thought.
1st impressions are the car is nice. Good enough for an economy (lol) car and with the 5 spd, fun to drive. Tires, Hankooks, are terrible on snow. Scary terrible, and I grew up driving on nothing but all seasons even with my 5.0 back in the early 90's. Never had winter tires. I bought new wheels and generic winter tires for this thing, and what a difference. That's all less than 2 weeks in...
Then on Monday this week...kid is driving it and the oil light comes on. Less than 1000 km and it's gotta be flat-decked in for warranty work - blew the oil sending unit off the car somehow. (Haven't even made a payment yet) Makes me wonder if this is what I'm in for for buying a GM product instead of sticking with Ford like I have for the past 26 years. Or I should've just bought another V6 car...like a 5 yr old Accord or something.
MPGs suck. Unbelievably suck. 9.1l/100 km (26 US mpg) out of a 4 cyl. I'm hoping there is some truth to the whole "programmed from the factory to run rich" BS for the first 1000 or so km...otherwise I may be looking at finding someone to take over the payments, and go buy a 5 yr old Corolla instead, or an old diesel Jetta...and actually get close to or better than what they claim! Why is no one suing GM over false mileage claims?
So I guess we'll take a wait and see approach for the time being. Maybe I just have to learn to drive 50 mph to work everyday...gets close to 35 mpg at that speed.
On a positive note...hard as it may be to find one so early in the ownership game...it is fun to drive; took it to the city to get my new wheels and gotta say, driving a little pipsqueak like this is a hoot.
