Odd noises.

So my sonic makes a couple noises I'm not happy with.:sadbanana:

I want to see if anyone else has these same noises.

First is a squeak from the passenger side of the engine, that will keep squeaking for a few moments after the car shuts off.

Dealer diagnosed it as a belt.

Second is an occasional whistling/hissing noise from the dash when the A/C is on.

Dealer said everything was fine they couldn't replicate the noise and "didn't smell anything". Though when I checked the system the pressure was low

I also noticed the A/C pump cycling today when it was 75 degrees outside.

maybe I'm nitpicking but I feel like neither is normal.

A/C compressor clutch spinning as it's disengaged?

Hissing from the interior could be the system working as the compressor cycles on and off??


Hard to do, but if we only have 1 belt (do we?), and you can reach down by the belts and put a dab of petroleum jelly on a pully which comes in contact with the belt, that will get on the belt and help it grip just a little better for a short period of time.... did the noise go away after that? OF COURSE DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING

Well the squeak happens with the a/c on or off. doesn't change at all. which makes me think its not a belt. and I have had it squeak for up to 5-6 seconds after the car was off. its the weirdest thing


the noise in the cabin is random, but seems to only happen after you accelerate. and then a few moments after you start to cruise you hear it. its hard to describe but its never the same each time. sometimes its short hissing and sometimes its a long whistle

Your description of the sound from the interior AC sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Mine did it from day 1 when bought new last year. My last car took 12 years before it made the very same sound, so something is definitely not right with the AC, possibly a leak in the hose connecting the condenser to the compressor.
I plan to take it to my dealer soon and will report back.

My last car took 12 years before it made the very same sound, so something is definitely not right with the AC, possibly a leak in the hose connecting the condenser to the compressor.
I plan to take it to my dealer soon and will report back.

my thoughts exactly. I told the dealer I though it was leaking from the evap core, as I know of other sonics that have had that issue. its kinda scary because I'm a delivery driver. so I spend 8 hrs a day in the car and the ac is usually on.

they told me they "couldn't smell anything" which is irritating because refrigerant doesn't have a smell.

it does have oil it though, but I don't think it's a leak IF the pressure remains the same over a couple of weeks or so... The hissing could be the system cycling on and off (the refrigerant hissing as it expands into a gas....)

But ~5 seconds of a squeak... the a/c compressor clutch spins all the time, only when it's on does it work the system, otherwise it's just a free spinning clutch... I wonder if there's something internal to it.

Got a buddy to turn the car off while you pinpoint the exact location of it?

Well i went to the dealer and they replaced the belt. squeak is still there

they also told me the noise when i shut the car off is the turbo "winding down"... I know what a turbo sounds like 15 of the 70 odd cars i have owned have been turbo.. so i am beyond pissed.

that's total BS...
I did notice mine does spin a few revs (but not more than a second)..when shutting off.

No turbo in the world squeaks!!!

Update after AC checked by dealer:
Took the service manager out for a drive because whenever you leave your car with dealers to replicate an issue, more often than not they can't replicate it. However as usual, call it Murphy's law, the intermittent hissing during our drive was not as loud as usual. I could still easily hear it but the service manager said he wasn't sure he heard anything.
They had a tech inspect the vehicle for any problems with AC but they couldn't find anything.

The system adequately cools the car but no more. In the meantime my concern is logged on my file in case it fails, which is under warranty anyway.

Yeah. I couldn't believe they told me the squeak was the turbo. It took all my will power not to throttle the guy right there.

Have the same noise on my 2016 RS A/C system. Coming from an X-GM tech for nine years, there's really nothing that can be done. It's just the gases in the system expanding/compressing through the TXV ( thermal expansion valve). Most newer GM vehicles with good working systems all do that. How about this, Drivers door panel squeak when driving or this the radio on. Aggravating me! Shuts up if i keep my arm on the door though.
