New car sales people are trained to sell what is on hand. It is further complicated because many new car sales persons have rarely (and some not at all) done a retail sales order.
For the last several years (not quite 20) I have alternated between just a few dealerships, whose front office quickly recognizes (as soon as they have looked me up in their data base) that I tend to order what I want instead of compromising by taking what they got.
You might do better by trading quickly then waiting a year or two. You won't do well, but I'd rather give up the two or three grand and be happy then not and never be satisfied.
But that is just me.
