Pic of Air Intake cracked. Will happen to you.

Many posts complained of poor performance, bad fuel economy, stuttering acceleration and some diagnostic trouble codes. I had these and changed the cold air intake tube, which goes from the air filter to the mass airflow sensor. Fixed everything. The guy at the parts counter said that he sells a lot of them. I hope they have improved the design. If not, plan on replacing this part about every 35k at a cost of $65. It is held on by two hose clamps, but the lower one is hard to loosen. I used a 1/4 drive ratchet with a deep socket to get to it. Anyway, since I haven't seen any pictures of the part, I thought I would post these. Mine is a 2013.

Reading about this issue, it only seems to effect the 1.8L engines. Did GM use a better quality product on the 1.4T? Think if I had this issue I would buy an aftermarket intake to permanently solve this.

Actually, that is the same part that I bought from the Chevy dealer, but a little cheaper. I paid $53.82. The same part from Amazon is $43.36.

I just pulled mine out and wrapped it with duct tape real tight. No issues since. Been 30k since

Ours was doing same thing running rough found the cracked air intake hose replaced with new one runs like new again this was about 6 months ago Now we are dealing with the auto trans shift button sticking and not be able to shift out of park also when the button sticks the key wont come out of ignition I did find out about the access hole under ign switch to be able to remove key.

My daughter has our 2013 Sonic at college and the car was tripping a CEL flagging a lean condition. Since she was over 350 miles away and about to drive home I told her to take it to a local dealer. I was charged $120.00 for the repair, parts and labor. I wish I saw this earlier because I could have had her look at it.

Thanks for posting this! I will check mine out later today to see if I have that problem. While my fuel economy is still strong, and there have been no error codes, I have noticed that the performance is slightly off. I recently changed my air filter, but didn't inspect the hose to see if there was anything torn. At the very least, the duct tape solutions might work.

Might try gorilla tape, a little stronger than duct tape I think.

A little late to the forum, but does an CAI solve this problem? This happened to my wife when we pushed the car pretty hard one day. I'm not wanting to have it happen again lol

If a CAI does not do the trick I guess I will do some good ole ducktape and some flexseal lol

I just patched mine up with electrical tape, let's see how it holds out and if I see any difference in mpg

If you get any aftermarket intake it should replace the pipe that is torn, so yes.

Solved it for me. I replaced it with one from the dealer. Other posters have pointed out that the replacements are made from a new material that will not fail.

I know this is an old ass post, but wanted to thank the people here for leaving this info here. This was exactly my problem as well!

I had the Fuel Trim Lean and Mass Airflow codes, just as a 411.

Also Just as a heads up to anyone else who stumbles on this thread, Chevy still will cover the replacement for this part, so if you have this issue go to a dealership and just let them know there is a special coverage for this bad boy and they should fix you up right quick!

Cool, thanks for the info everyone. I’ll be checking my hose as soon as possible. My fuel economy has been on a steady decline lately. Partly due to p0597, but also due to other factors that are unknown to me, potentially until this point. Thank you
