Riding the clutch out softly to take off is the absolute fastest way to use up the life of a clutch.
...If you need to climb a hill, shift down a gear. Yes, rpms will go up but the amount of throttle needed will go down which should result in better mpgs.
There has to be a reason some of these cars are getting ridiculously low mileage. Something is wrong. My 1.4 automatic is getting 28 on the highway. I have a Sienna van that gets better mileage. I drive like a normal person. Or, at least, I drive in the same manner as I drive the van. Pathetic mileage. With the last tank I barely made it over 20 mpg city. I'm just waiting to be in the teens...
