Rear View Camera

Will there or will there not be a rear view camera in the 2014 Sonic. Does anyone know for sure. GM isn't saying!

Ive heard talk that all new cars have to come with back up cameras for safety. Not sure when this will take effect.

i didn't ask if any of you thought they were needed..i asked if you knew if they would be or not be on the 2014 Sonic. thanks for the insight into your lack of knowledge. you must be the same guys who delight in reporting sonic sightings

I don't think the Sonic will get a rearview camera because its such a small car its not needed. Is that more to your liking?

2014 was the original year vehicle rear safety standards (read rear view camera) were to go into effect. There have been delays, and as far as I know a new date certain has not been set but I believe it won't be long.

I think most new cars could use backup cams now because of the high rear belt line. If I ever add a screen to mine, I'll put in a cam.

The requirement is being pushed by some lady who ran over her kid in an escalade.

I've had good success installing cheap $30 backup cams from Amazon with aftermarket head units. It even had better resolution and better night visibility than my Mazda CX-9's stock camera.

OP, were you going to trade in for a '14 model if it had a backup cam?

Yes my Sonic is not drivable right now, does that some how diminish the value of my input? I don't think so, if I sold it or had never even purchased a Sonic then sure my input holds no value.

Simmer down. We don't need a flame war. Instead we should work to making things like Onstart, back up cameras, traction control, etc optional equipment ;p. (Although I would really like that, I don't like paying for things I don't need or want).

This doesnt even make sense. Lack of knowledge? I dont think anyone said I dont know. We gave the best answers we could. Dont like the answers you get dont ask.

Probably not in 2014 but whether it is a camera or some other warning device or system, rear safety something will be here soon enough. As the regulators dither away, at some point there will be a date certain. Of course, I could be wrong but the automobile safety advocates do tend to get what they want, and I do not see this being different. I could list items we now have today that we did not have pre-1965 but the list would go on and on and I would certainly miss something. The original post asked for a date certain. At one time there was a date certain. Today as far as I know there is not but based on history there will be.

We do have ten airbags and if I recall correctly those were not required when the Sonic came out but were then and still are mandated for 2014.

And I must see a need for all this safety equipment because as some will recall my other car is a Corvair.

I wouldn't mind putting a rear view camera on my little hatch. When reversing at an angle to a car with a low bumper, I have a hell of a time trying to figure out where my car stops and the other car begins! I often end up stopping with a whopping 3' between the two cars. I'm still accustomed to my parent's old Cavalier which has a trunk that goes on for miles. It's a little unnerving, with the lack of visibility out the rear of the car (and yes, I use my mirrors).
