Road Trip!

Finally! I got time off to drive to see my family! They live about 800 miles away from me, and I get to take my sonic out on the long journey. Does anyone have any tips on maximising my mpg on such a long 1600 mile trip?

Don't accelerate too hard, coast whenever you can. Windows up.

The very best thing you can do, is keep the speed down. It'll be rough on a long trip, but you'll get your best mileage around 45 mph.

I can cruise at 45 in sixth, reset my mpg, and it'll pop to around 60mpg.

I can cruise at 65 in sixth, reset my mpg, and it'll pop to around 40mpg.

Keep in mind, that's just instant mileage. Real world, counting stops, breaking, accelerating, all that jazz will be lower.

I set the cruise control at 65 and got an average of 47.6 on a little road trip I took from Maryland to Tennessee

Of course, do not trust the MPG meter on the dash. It will read about 1-2 mpg higher than your REAL mpg, which should be calculated by taking the number of miles driven on that tank and dividing it by the number of gallons you put back in the tank.

Put atleast 35 psi in the tires, I recommend 40 and personally run at max.

Short shift while accelerating and be gentle.

Set the cruise at the slowest speed you feel is safe for the road and conditions. On long trips I like to get behind a semi or car that is going slower than I would normally drive so I'm not disturbing the flow of traffic (the other guy is ), You can also catch a little draft which is good for MPG.

Coast to stops and read traffic. Speeding up and slowing down and repeating is also bad for mpg unless you've mastered the "pulse and glide" technique but that's another story.

Only use the A/C when you have to, cool down with it on max and then turn it off. A/C uses alot of gas and it's gonna use the same amount whether the fan is set to 1 or 4. Windows down is better for MPG than A/C unless you're hauling the mail but is worse than having them cracked or ideally closed.

Other than that just enjoy the trip .
