Yes . . engine hot. . that's probably why it rounded, or else whoever changed it before tightened it too much.

It had already been getting rounded the past few times I'd changed oil, today it got to a point where I couldn't use it anymore. Guess I should've put in a new one last time. :blankface:

I'll try it with it hot the next couple days.

If you have a 12-14 inch pipe wrench with nice sharp teeth, that should work. Designed to grip round metal and gives you more leverage than a vice grips.

Harbor Freight, which I usually avoid, sells a 14-inch pipe wrench, item number 61349, for only $6.99. Given the limited use it should get, this might be the best option.

After the free oil changes ran out I went to change my oil myself and found the oil drain bolt over tightened by the dealer and I ended up rounding the bolt, but stopped before complete damage. So I finally took it to SuperLube and told them the story. They worked at it a while and finally got it off. So I paid for an expensive oil change.

I asked them how they avoided over tightening and rounding. They told me that first they actually set their air wrenches according to manufacturer specs. Second they replace the oil drain bolt every time.

So I bought box of 10 oil drain bolts from Amazon to do my own oil changes.

You should NOT need to replace the bolt every time.
Maybe the washer if thats the kind you have. (the stock one has an o-ring)

I have been changing my oil with the stock one with 0 problems since day 1.
A 6 point socket and proper torque are the key.

I had the dealer do the first complimentary oil change then have done all of them myself, only reason I replaced the drain plug was to use the Metalnerd magnetic plug.

As TurtleOverlord mentioned, don't torque the heck outta the bolt (it's like 10ft/lbs spec and o-ring to seal) and use a good socket.

Yup, the right socket and torq are all that's needed.

Had the dealer do the first one and was the last as they rounded and over torqued it... so I got the Metalnerd plug and been doing mine every 3k sense.

Plus... and this one boggles the mind, the damn oil pan has the torq spec stamped on it.
