Smooth out your SRI for $15

Installed this honeycomb screen tonight. As to the effectiveness, I can't really confirm anything. Seems to feel smoother going from closed to part throttle, but only have about 15 miles on it.

I suspect the real beneft would be to anyone tuning themselves. I would send a datalog to trifecta to see if they see any difference, but I'm sure I would get the standard "everything looks good, no adjustments neccesary". Only thing I can think of would be to go to the dyno, but I won't be doing that til spring, so if anyone with more knowledge than me wants to try this, it cost about $15, and took maybe 2 minutes.

The screen came from saxon pc, and it's 70mm (you have to specify custom size when ordering). 70mm fits the DDM intake, I can't say for any others. Basically, I removed the filter and slid the screen in until it bottomed out. Pretty tight fit, and now it is sandwiched between the recess of the filter, and the intake tube(70mm is the OD of the intake tube).

I got a much shoddier version of this for $11, same honeycomb shape but no housing, it's just a disc cut out of a larger honeycomb sheet.

I do not notice any difference between the honeycomb and the simple window screen fix.

However, in the window screen thread, there's a report showing that while the low end is helped, the power under high RPM is actually reduced with the screen in place. So I'd love to see a similar study done with a honeycomb filter, to see if we are still looking at the same tradeoff.

Swordsmith, I did another datalog with the screen in and the results are conflicting. The low end power increase that was there in 2 other runs was non existent, there were some losses in the a narrow spot in the midrange and then the topend was near identical to the no screen runs.

The findings are maddening, nothing is near consistent enough to say anything empirically about the screen. It feels smoother down low but I still can't get any conclusive data on its effects.

think the car is still trying to dumb down? I am sure your tuned but does that completely stop the car from trying to go back to normal conditions?

Yes the tune stops the dumbing down. Torque management is what "dumbs" down any mods back to stock torq levels. The tune raises the torq allowance. If you bolt something on that will make more power than the tune allows, it will "dumb" that down. But it's unlikely to be a problem, because if you were to bolt a bigger turbo on, you'd be foolish not to have the tune adjusted accordingly.

There was no housing around the honeycomb. Just a round piece cut from a bigger sheet. Fit beautifully tho.

Update: I just wanted to drive this thing for a few days before I made any conclusions. Definitely smoother take off and low rpm driving. I can feel no noticeable difference in higher rpms other than the loss of the "surge" feeling I would get some times. It used to take a lot of concentration, correct planetary alignment, an act of congress, and just a little magic to get a smooth 1-2 shift. Now it's almost like a normal car. Wish I had done this a while ago.

I can't speak to the difference between this and the window screen, but I would highly recommend this to anyone with an aftermarket intake.
