I use my Sonic as a cargo vehicle. I can cram a lot of stuff inside. I have cheap temporary roof racks that let me haul a lot of stuff on top. But recently I decided to go one further and get a trailer hitch. I've been very pleased with this decision.
I got the hitch from UHaul, and had them install it. There are certainly much cheaper ways to do this, but it was my intention to use it mostly to rent trailers from UHaul, and I figured that being able to say "you guys installed the hitch" would take care of most of the argument from the folks behind the counter who might say my tiny car can't actually tow anything.
Since getting the hitch I have hauled two heavy loads, one of steel and one of copper, and a bulky torn down plastic shed, and just today 13 boxes of wood roses. In every case the Sonic has handled well and had no real trouble with accelerating, breaking, or general driving under load, with the exception of my original loadout of the roses, where I put most of the weight behind the axle. Don't do that! Moved the boxes around and then I could barely tell the thing was back there.
