Specific Subwoofer Setup Question

*I didn't want to make a new thread for this but it's the best way to get more experienced minds to answer my question instead of posting in an existing thread.

I already know I'm going to tear out the lousy sound system that is so-called "Premium" for something better. Speakers will come later though.

I want to run two subs.. And no, not two 12"s to rattle my doors off. lol

I'm stuck on what size subs will sound best. (note: sound quality in #1 on my list)
I want to do something like 10" & 8", or 10" & 6", or 12" & 8"... Along those lines.
I want one big sub for the low bass in songs, and one smaller sub for the hits.

This being my first small car I have absolutely NO IDEA how it will sound inside the tiny cabin.

Can anybody help me out here?

I'm teasing you. With such large stock speaker locations (6.5") there is no need for a small "punchy" sub. Just replace them with components that have good mid-bass performance (power them with a 4 channel amp) and install a single 12" JL woofer on a monoblock JL amp to handle the lows.

I want to replace the door speakers with these JBL's but I don't know which ones are the best since their selection is so huge.

Well it depends, honestly I had 2 8s in one car that hit like 12s I've heard quiet 18s... So it really depends..

Id personally go with 2 8" American bass xd

The size has only a little to do with their loudness in a normal setup. It's all about accuracy and frequency response. The smaller the sub, the tighter and more accurate the bass will be because the smaller cone can move faster, but they don't go as low or move as much air when cranked hard (I. E. they'll be quieter) . Since lower freqs are rare (most is within 60-300Hz) for uncompressed music, a 10 will give you a nice tradeoff of accuracy and freq response.

If you want a multiple sub setup, I'd go with 2*8, 1*10, and 1*12. That would give you the widest freq response without being ridiculous.

I'm doing a single 10" I don't need to rattle my car off the road lol.

I wanted multiple for the best SQ but 4 is a bit much haha

I'm hoping one 12" & four good 6x9's like Opticon said will sound good.

My old car had 4 15s running about 10k true watts to the subs 8 6.5 on 3500w so I think it would be okay...

JBL GTO, Infinity Kappa, and Polk dB coaxial drivers are designed with a higher sensitivity. They are designed for systems where there isn't a lot of power available but you need more volume (stock replacements with no added amp). Because they are designed for low power there is a compromise in range and response. They are usually an upgrade over stock stuff due to the better materials, but they are not the building blocks of a GOOD sound system. If you choose to go with these simple upgrades they will still lack mid-bass "punch" and you may want a smaller sub to help compensate.

But really, if you are willing to buy and power two mismatched subs in pursuit of a more balanced sound, I suggest just saving your pennies and installing higher quality door speakers powered by a good amp. Then your subwoofer can do what it's really meant to do... cover the VERY bottom end of the frequency range.

I am by NO means trying to put a "cheap" system in my car. Sound quality is number 1.

Getting off topic a little here but, can you name the top car speakers out there? amped.

Then I suggest Status or M line GermanMAESTRO speakers.

EDIT: They are an old (and VERY good) MB Quartz design remanufactured and just making their way back into the USA. I had two sets of their mid level 6.5" component model in my Chrysler 300M (powered by a JL 300/4) and they were clean and loud enough to cut your face in half without a single hint of distortion.

Despite what has been said, I've always had incredible luck and great sound quality with Infinity Reference and Kappa series. They were good with the stock stereo, but amazing with an aftermarket.
