Most modern engines you need to run the ECU along with all the modules that the ECU is expecting input from. Otherwise there are module replicators that will provide the input, but in that case you're usually looking at a very expensive set up.
The most cost effective would likely be running the ECU and all the factory modules like the BCM using the factory harness with the massive amount of splicing
Standalone engine management is possible because all the computer is doing is running the spark, boost and fuel

I plan to run the ECU I am aware something needs to injectors to fire, plugs to spark, etc. what I don't necessarily need is 200 lbs of wires that run to nowhere. From my experience with similar swaps after I remove all the excess wires plugs etc. the computer is usually not happy if it doesn't know if a door is open, or if the Sweet belts are buckled. There is almost always at least one non-performance related and seemingly random thing the ECU is looking for and won't run (at least not correctly) without it. As well as the anti-theft system causes massive headaches. I'm wondering if anyone had used the 1.4t in a no-sonic/cruise application and if so, what issues did they encounter.

If it were me I would push towards a standalone ECU setup, probably a Megasquirt in the interest of cost. You can really pare the wiring down to the bar necessities. The only problem is there probably is not a base map available for the 1.4T to get you up and running.

Ah, I misunderstood what you said, sounds like you know what you're doing. If you proceed with this project I think you will be the one finding all this out and letting us know!

To run the engine, as it is just out of a car (stock throttle body, transmission) you need the engine, trans, associated wiring harnesses, throttle pedal assembly. The rest you can (likely, verify) disable everything using EFILive or HPTuners. But you can disable security (VATS) with those and you dont have to worry about seat belts, airbags with the engine ECM. Those are handled by the BCM, completely separate module. You might lose things like cruise control and have to figure out outputs for a dash (Dakota Digital to start).
