Steering Noise

For the past 2 days I've heard a loud constant creaking noise when turning my steering wheel. Like the creaking noise you hear when you turn your wheel/tires and the vehicle is in park.

I'm probably not making any sense.

Has anyone experienced any type of Steering Noise?

It's Electronic Power Steering so there is no fluid to check. I wanted to ask the question here before taking it to the dealer. When they see a woman walking in they automatically roll their eyes and barely listen. :blankface:

I noticed a little squeaking out of the column/dash area on lunch last week. It was the hottest day the car has ever seen, it was mid 80's up here, Thursday I think. Haven't heard it any other time.

The radio said it was 100*F when I got in...

It started on a really rainy humid day. Of course I contributed the noise to the dampness. However, it hasn't stopped Been hot here also.

Yep! Mine has just started doing that too, but it's not consistent. Let us know what the dealer says!

Clunking when turning sounds like a tie=rod or a suspension problem. The latter can be real difficult to isolate, but better get it done now before it affects the rest of the suspension.

That's not what I had.

Just walk in with a big hammer, and if they question you, demonstrate the noise on their counter.

I drove it straight to the dealer this morning. They believe the its the steering rack. GM is paying for my rental car. Yay!!

I also had an issue with my Sonic's steering. I didn't hear anything like you did, but I could feel the steering in my clutch if I had it depressed while turning. Not in the wheel, only in the clutch. I took a look and found the steering boot was all bunched up on the drivers side. I straightened it out, and its as good as new. I'm not sure if this is a common issue with the Sonic's, but if it happens again Ill be using my warranty to to have it replaced.

I'm a little late on giving advice (sorry, I'm new here!) but I thought I'd share. I hope you're back on the road soon!

Of course, after sitting at the dealer all night the car is not making the noise this morning. I told them they need to drive it. They are going to keep it and drive it throught the day. UGH! opcorn:

Mine was making a clunking noise too. I took it to the dealer and they found a stabilizer bar that had broke loose. Took a week and a half for them to get the part. lol

Well I'm back to square one. Dealer is confused as it's a new vehicle and they have never worked on one before. Says it's a rubber part rubbing against another ....were not specific at all. Dealer stated they were calling chevy and going to call me back. Havent heard a word from them yet. They asked me to come get my car friday claiming it was "drivable" and chevy would no longer pay for rental.

I've had to call chevy again and file a complaint. If they don't know what's wrong or how to fix it how can they say it's drivable??

I bought a Lemon! HAHAHAHA

Will it make the noise when you push the car side to side?
Does it do it when you are stepping on the brakes and turning at the same time?

Just found out the reason mine was making the clunking sound had something to do with the steering shaft. The mechanic told me there is a bulletin out stating that it needs to be greased.

Maybe call your dealer and have them check the bulletin.

Mine is still making the noise or maybe it's a new one. I've been trying to pay attention, mine makes the noise when I drive after being parked for awhile. I can't pinpoint a specific time (rpm) that it makes the noise, but it makes it one time and then is fine after that.

Mine makes a God-awful creeking/rubbing sound when turned all the way to the stop. Dealer heard it but when I returned to leave the vehicle for repair, it couldn't be duplicated. Come to find, under environmentally cold conditions (when I dropped it off), it's not present. Now that we are having to some warmer days, it's back.
Will be going back to the dealer to try again.

I had this same creaking noise for a few days, took into the dealer and had them look at it, they claimed they couldn't find anything or reproduce it even though when I dropped it off I took the service representative I had for a short drive to reproduce the sound and he confirmed he heard it.

Of course I heard it make the noise when I was driving it off the lot. A week later I brought it in again when hearing some rattling while at low speeds at every little bump, brought it in again, at first they told me they couldn't find anything or reproduce the noise but being my second visit in two weeks they had the shop foreman take it for a drive and he immediately said he heard it and determined it was the sway bar link.

That's part number 9546578, labelled 34 here.

It's supposed to arrive next week and we'll see if it's solved the issue.

I have 3k miles on mine and it just started doing this today. I jacked up the drivers side to listen but the vibration rubbing sound echoed and it was hard to pin point where its coming from. I have a mechanics stethoscope I'll poke around with to see if I can tell what piece is creaking.
