First some background, I'm a application devloper for a small design studio call Slocum First some background, I'm a application developer for a small design studio call Slocum Design Studio...
After talking to a friend of mine about how we hate nearly all in dash touch LCD media/nav setups we decided come up with a plan and design to make our own with some extra goodies besides entertainment. This all came up during a car show over this past weekend, we were sitting in his Scion wait for the judge to come by. I was playing with his god forsaken in dash touch based all in one unit and I was getting really pissed at how bad it was! Even he (Mike) admitted that it was quite bad. So we got to thinking, how hard could it be to make our own system? I have experience in creating ECU readers for engine logging and he is good with planning out layout designs that flow really well. So the this is our plan....
Operating System: X86 based Android 4.0
Hardware: Intel MINI ITX Computer (remember this doesn't need to be crazy powerful to run android)
Sound: Not my department buddy still working on the configuration
We are planning on keeping all existing function of the current system, so that means keeping OnStar if we can. I've been taking to some of the guys over at Chevy and they do have an API to connect to the car's diagnostics remotely over bluetooth. So I've been sending email to GM asking if I can get some sort of dev kit to work with. If not we plan to tap right into the OBD port and get our engine info from the port.
As we are still working out much of the details I will keep everyone up to date on all progress and mile stones.
