thermostat housing coolant leak warranty powertrain

dealer wants a grand to repair coolant leak thermostat housing and bypass hose my powertrain warranty states Coverage on the engine coolant system begins at the inlet to the water pump and ends with the thermostat housing and/or outlet that attaches to the return hose. I showed that to adviser and shop foreman who said they input the labor codes to replace and it came up as not a warrantied job they don't read warranty book second time there for same leak first time they couldn't find it and said to let tank go empty and bring it back if it did!!! my engine had already started overheating beeping noises and red light we pulled over and added coolant they think I'm stupid I guess WHat can I do? been through two service advisors 2 mechanics

Housing and t-stat is less than $50 online... Prestone Dexcool is $13 at Wal-mart... You do need someone who is willing to be a bit patient, as there are many connections on the housing and the bolts have external torx heads (E-10), but this can be fixed for less than $100 - if that is all that is wrong with it.

Depending on your mileage, I'd also replace the coolant reservoir while it is all apart, and maybe the O-rings at the firewall to the heater core.

All of this is well-documented in other threads.

BUT, if you have been driving it overheated, this could cause other problems. I caught this early on my three Sonics so none of them ever got so low on coolant to the point of overheating.

You can do the whole job in about an hour. Really. It's stupid simple.

I did this exact repair on my car.. I used grey RTV for the water outlet and the thermostat housing..

It's easy, but take your time. Plastic stuff does break.

About a month ago, came home from night duty, shut off my engine and heard a giant kettle bubbling. Fast forward, mechanic checked it out said my four-year-old car out of showroom was overheating. No light came on or anything mind you. Then he ran his checks, said my thermostat had gone. All the time I was watching coolant disappear. Then he ordered one in, fixed thermostat, and numerous other things he found along the way. Two weeks after getting back the car, coolant is again disappearing with an almost zero level constantly. Talked to the mechanic who looked again and said, my water pump gone through. I love my car, but I am now officially fed up.
