Those with failed PCV or other major engine parts

Can you list:
- Mileage the failure occurred
- What the Failure(s) was/were
- What part of the globe you're located in. Lon/Lat Finder (You don't have to be exact) or at least the Average temperature in your area at the time of the failure or on average.


Seems most parts that fail are due to heat. If that is part of the reason then I'd like to find out if those in cooler climates still experience the same failures at the same mileage.

I had the intake manifold, valve cover, and turbo fail. All between 43 and 45k. It was during the summer so it was in the high 90s low 100s. The car also shakes like a chihuahua with the ac on and is slower than a prius in the heat.

current mileage 64k

* valve cover failed around 40k-45k (hot/humid rainy summer day)
* intake failed probly around 45k-50k and replaced at 64k (not sure when it was truly taken out)
* tubro failed 63k-64k (summer 90s-100s)

here is some extra info:

* Oil changed every 3k miles, last oil change STP dexos Full Synth (couldnt find Mobil One) and STP Extended Life filter (couldnt find K&N or Mobil)only had 900 miles on it, dealer changed oil when turbo was replaced and did not reset life so i left it and will change when its 3k(only know it is full synth)
* Sunoco 93, use the same pump/station all the time

- oil change frequency and type/brand.
- Fuel Octane rating.
Then with lon/lat data determine altitude as well.

I used 86 back then. The turbo went boom first then the valve cover. Those were before tuning. Then tuned on 91, and installed a downpipe and then hit the fuel cut off and kissed that orange valve goodbye. No problems since except that I have a massive boost leak that I developed after bypassing the bypass. My fault though since I bought a used intercooler kit.

2012 LT 1.4T bought at 107k currently just touched 114.

-PCV Failure at 110k, the rubber hose leading from the turbo to the manifold.
Replaced with DIY hosing.

-Vapor Purge Valve at 112k. Replaced with ACDelco part from Amazon $22.

No idea about past history. I replaced the oil twice 3.5k intervals. Going to 4k here for the next one.

Most of its history is unknown to me. It was decently well taken care of when i bought it.
Columbus Ohio was its primary home. Temperate weather.

PCV check valve failed on the first pull after it was tuned at 25k. However the manifold was ported and from a sonic with about 40k on it already. It was about 75-80 degree sunny day in greenville, sc

2013 RS Automatic bought brand new. Approximately 15k miles, had the water pump replaced for leak and also the transmission torque converter seal was replaced at same time for minor leak. No problems since. Oil changes done every year with Amsoil Signature series 5w30 (don't get enough miles on the car in a year to trip the oil monitor)and either Wix or Fram filter. Same for the transmission fluid as well, once a year with Amsoil signature series. Using 91 Octane pure gas (No ethanol) which is the highest octane available here in the Oklahoma City, OK area.

The parts were replaced in January of 2016 under warranty so hard to say if heat was a contributing factor since temps were down between 30-50. I know for a fact the 1.4L Ecotec engines have had a terrible water pump history and I also seem to recall the torque converter seal being somewhat of a recurring dealer issue for that particular line of transmissions as well after some research.

Both failed. The vapor purge valve is more emissions from the gas tank than the PCV system. Both are probably independent of each other.

I guess so. Then again we cracked the windshield on the sonic because we turned the heater on in the dead of winter. The temperature difference probably put too much stress on the glass.

By the same token, if the Turbo is being cooled by coolant it might have added to the heat before the rest of the motor could warm up and stressed the seals.
Just a guess.

Internal PCV valve is still visible in the intake manifold but will be replacing it at the same time since I can't trust it now.

Turbo failure at 65k miles although it had been showing signs of underboost since the car was about a year old and 15k miles.

Intake manifold and valve cover about 66k miles.


Average temps around time of failure and a few weeks before were in the mid 80's.
