tire rotation/balance ... how often?

Hi. I have 5k on my Sonic and I am about to get its oil and filter changed. But should I get my tires rotated/balance too? I noticed there is clearly a tread wear difference between the front and rear tires. I personally think I can wait until 7.5k miles for a rotation but I'm curious as to what other folks do. (I drive so little that waiting until 7.5k miles means waiting a full six months.)

If its going in anyways and you dont mind letting a shop do it, a rotation probably wouldnt be a bad idea.

I rotate once a year...only balance when necessary....

I attempt to adhere to the 7,500 recommendation. I also agree with balance as necessary; you will feel if re-balance is needed.
If abnormal wear is noticeable, an alignment check could be beneficial.

I personally rotate every oil change. I also regularly change my oil at or before 5k miles it's very rare I exceed 5k mile on a oil change

How would you know if balancing is needed? Would there be some obvious shuddering or pulling to the left or right?

Would be a vibration either in the seat for rear tires or in the steering wheel for front tires

I rotate every 5k miles. I have been slacking the last few oil changes and didn't do it but there wasn't a need for it. With bigger vehicles I'd recommend balance every 15k. With the sonic I do it as needed. After you buy tires check to see if u get free balance. The Goodyear I worked at each tire was $15 to mount and balance(about $5 higher than other companies at that time) but it came with free balance for the life of the tire. If I do this, I'd go every 10-15 to get my money's worth.

So it sounds like getting tires rotated with every oil change is common practice but probably not necessary. Doing it every 7.5k or 10k miles is probably fine. Getting tires balanced should be done only if one suspects they are out of balance.

I usually get the free rotate with balance, I do that on my Pathfinder... 31x10.50 and Discount Tire does it for me... but my Sonic just got new rims and tires so no need just yet.. but will at every oil change.. just my preference...
