Traded my Sonic in on a Genesis Coupe.

If any one is interested on some feedback, I know GM browses these forums...I originally bought the Sonic LTZ Sedan because I wanted a gas sipper for my 100 mile roundtrip daily commute. I also liked the Idea of small displacement turbo engine and often wondered why car makers didn't use turbo more often. I grew up in Michigan and I wanted to do my part to buy American and better yet a car made in MI.
For what it is the Sonic is a great car. It's inexpensive to own and operate, great for a college student who's parents can buy them a brand new car.
For starters the owners manual fell apart in my hands the first time I opened it!!! WTH!!
The reality is the stubby look is kinda cheesy
Leatherette??? Its plastic and it made the car stink like fish. I would have preferred cloth seats in my LTZ.
Performance is weak unless you get one of the re flash programs which I did and it helped.
The flimsy drivers seat armrest which looked like it was upholstered in my basement was not enough to share with a passenger!
My girlfriend said I looked like a dork in the car.... and I cleaned it up to be PC. Dork is not the word she used! I am 45 not 25 so maybe she was right.
I had to make a decision since I had put 27000 miles on the car in 10 months. Did I want to get stuck with this car and have the miles continue to rack up and its value drop??

hahaha xD now you look like a dorky 45 year old dude in a Genesis...If your worried about your appearance in the car then you probably shoulda went with something more mature from the get go...Mustang, Camaro, BMW...but hope it works for you!

btw...I have the pleather seats too...I don't smell the fish...sure its the seats and not your significant other??

sure, they're both trucks, but they serve entirely different purposes, they have different abilities, different target audiences.

you really can't compare the two cars.

(Sonic is the Duramax, by the way)

plus at 45, you should be married with kids, not a girlfriend

Now that would look dorky/ mid life crises. With the Mustang being the leader in that category and the Camaro and Beamer jockying for position several steps below the stang.

1.I thought the fishy new car smell in the Sonic would not last. but damn as the summer got hotter it got worse!
2. The Genesis coupe is awesome! Great torque out of a 2.0 4 banger! And the ECM can be flashed for more power. (maybe someday) Stock it is 260 HP with reg unleaded and 274 with 92+ octane. That is at about 25mpg avg. has a great stereo and Bluetooth for the phone. I do miss the 35 or so MPG of the Sonic. Oh well gotta pay to play.
3. Mid life crisis?? Most definitely! Actually it is my second. I bought an 02 Camaro SS the last year of the old body style. Now that car was fun!
4. Genesis has absolutely no headroom in back seat. Luckily my kid is grown and has her own car. I am torn on missing my Sonic for the MPG or enjoying a more refined ride. I got the genesis for 25 grand before tax tags and title. Sticker was like 27800.00 I was upside down on my trade of the Sonic by 3 or 4 grand so I lost my ass. Just my experience and my two cents.

$3-4k upside down on a car as cheap as a Sonic? What was the trade in value at 27k miles?

And then you roll that negative equity into another brand new car? I can't fathom that people actually do this to themselves.

It's not the car you drive, and never has been the car you drive. It's always how you present yourself. I've driven everything from rotted out old datsun pickups to brand new shiney caddy. I never get anything but compliments in my orange sonic hatch cause the car is badass

I resent this. I'm a 25 year old grad student and this is the first brand new car I bought myself. Funny, all my friends thought the Sonic looked like a "mom car" when I brought it home. Also, I would have seriously questioned it if my new car smelt like fish, no matter the material of the seats. Seems like a personal problem..

Either way, it sounds like the majority of your problems with the Sonic were superficial and as others have said, things you should have realized from the test-drive, prior to buying the car. Clearly, it just wasn't the car for you. I hope you put more thought into buying the Genesis and you don't regret it!

Yeah Papasonic, I'm still in my early forties, the weird thing I've noticed about getting older is that you never really feel different inside, it just takes a little longer to get out of bed in the morning.
