Turbo Problems

My car is at the dealer now. So far they have replaced the turbo but still having an issue with a misfire after 3,000 rpms. They have no proof that any modifications I have made are causing the problem but telling me they may completely void the warranty on my car because of what I've done to it. I am tuned, have intake and catback exhaust and that's it. No ported intake or aftermarket bpv, nothing to cause internal valvetrain issues as they are claiming it may have now. Needless to say I am becoming extremely perturbed with my local dealership. The bad part is I've bought multiple cars from them and know most of the people in the service department and have never had an issue with them. Losing my faith in them.

Don't know about the Sonic world, but a tune in a Corvette or Camaro is automatic warranty void. In fact, dealers are supposed to check all V8 'Vettes, 'Maros, and Chevy trucks for a tune each time one comes in for service.

The tune voids the powertrain warranty but not the rest.

Automatic for the Corvette and Camaro. No questions asked.

So far this edict has not reached the four cylinder powered cars.

My point: evidence of a tune may be grounds for warranty voiding. In the case of a Corvette or a V8 Camaro it is not a question of may.

It's going to be hard for them to prove that your mods may be causing the issues, but you can't prove they aren't, either. Not unless you put it back to stock and it's still having the same problem. Send a log of your tune to your tuner and see what they have to say about it.

It's very hard to tell what is a manufacturer's defect and what is caused by various mods. Your tune might well have caused problems, more to the point it might well currently be causing problems. Probably it hasn't, but how can you prove that? How can the stealership prove that it has?

However, from a legal standpoint, there's no such thing as a mod that voids your entire warranty; the problem MUST be related to the mod. If you've replaced your exhaust system and your battery goes out, or your intake tube breaks, for example, there's no imaginable way that exhaust system caused those problems, so you're still covered for those problems. On the other hand, if you've switched to ethanol and your catalytic converter insides crumble due to heat or some weird chemical reaction, maybe they have a point.

I have my doubts about this problem being the valve train though. How about the spark gap, or the plugs themselves, or your injectors? Lots of stuff that causes this sort of symptom other than valves.

Plug gap is good. They wont go any further on the car as of now. Presented me with a bill for $1100 and told me they were not warrantying the turbo. I told them to give me a copy of the bill and proof that any mods i have caused the failure to take to my attorney. They now want to keep my car another day to pull programming from the pcm. I told them good luck and i would be waiting for their call.

I am not opposed to tuning, otherwise I would be a true hypocrite. I do believe people should know what they may be getting into if they choose to tune. This links to but one of many threads regarding tuning. It has a lot of info, way more than needed for our little neck of the woods, but as a consequence covers the pitfalls quite well.

GM has released a few bulletins regarding detecting aftermarket tunes. When this is suspected, the information goes way higher than just your dealership. There are very specific outlines regarding the reporting of aftermarket tunes, and it says in the bulletin that if different than stock programming is found, they may put a warranty block on the remainder of your powertrain warranty.

FYI. mine has/had same CEL 0299.

it is now at the dealer getting a new turbo installed due to a worn out pivot pin.

This did fall under the power train warranty.

Had the CEL 0299 last week while noticing the decrease in power. Drove the car for two days before I could get it in to the dealer (happened Christmas Eve afternoon) for repair. I couldn't find an answer anywhere regarding driving a car with a failing turbocharger, so I babied it as much as I could.

Got it in the day after Christmas and they did a turbocharger replacement for no charge, still under warranty at 52550 miles.

What was the outcome on this? Did they void any part of your warranty?

As of now I paid 830 to get my car back and my old turbo and was told the district service manager voided my warranty. When I got the car back I still had cylinder 4 misfire so I diagnosed it myself, bad compression. Thanks to the gm executive customer support, once I get my cable and flash back to stock, I will be taking my car to another dealer to have the issue fixed UNDER WARRANTY. Also while I'm there they will be analyzing my original turbo to check for misdiagnosis. If they find it wasn't diagnosed correctly, which from my research I'm confident they will, I will be reimbursed what I paid for the repairs. I also replaced the valve cover on my own upon getting my car back to eliminate that as a cause. The dealership I bought my car from and been going to for service is incompetent and I have all documentation to prove so. I have posted many pictures and have gone into detail on Facebook in the trifecta group page, check it out.

According to the bill they found aftermarket programming in the body control module, powertrain control module showed stock gm programming. Yes it was tuned while they had it. They tried to tell me they saw it boosting 26-28 psi, I laughed at them.

I have a 2013 sonic LT 1.4t automatic. Only mod I have is an injen intake. My turbo intermittently cuts out. It will be fine for a week straight and then it will have a random bad day and the car will have a hard time accelerating. When it happens, I will make the car downshift and it will start working again for 20 minutes or so until it cuts out again. This has been happening for a couple months now. Even though this happens quite often now and my car just doesn't feel like it has the performance it once did, I never get any underboost lights or anything whatsoever. No lights or codes ever. I'm going to call the dealer sometime in the next couple days but does anyone else's turbo randomly cut out without causing any codes or lights on their dash? I wonder if I were to put the stock intake back on if I would get the underboost code everyone else gets. I think I'm going to try it tomorrow. We'll see what happens.

Could be a pending code, it may show its ugly head soon with a CEL
