Ugh. The downside to not living in a major city

Went to get an estimate on window tinting this afternoon. For 35 on the sides and rear and a 6-inch brow... $300.

I blanched. I said that was about double what I was expecting. The owner simply shrugged and said "I'm the only game in town. That's what I charge. You can get the same thing for $100 in Chicago... if you want to make the 5-hour round trip."

Bleagh.

For $100-150 I would have had it done. For $300 I'll pass.

P.S. No, this isn't something I'd ever want to try doing myself.

But the way that guy tried to justify gouging you sounds like a total douchebag move. I would have haggled him down to a middle finger and walked away too.

I live in a small town and I got mine done for $160, 20% all around with a brow. We have a traveling van that comes on certain days to certain places. I had it done at a nearby dealership by this guy in the van.

Maybe try contacting some nearby dealerships and find out who they recommend if they don't do it themselves.

Really though. You should talk to some dealerships. I still had to travel 45 minutes one way but that's no big deal. Have to for everything anyway.

Hell my car was $120 and woulda been $90 if I had cash in hand. My buddy works at a dealer in West Palm Beach and he has a machine just puts make and model into it and it precuts the film for him and he just sticks it.

No clue why it would ever cost that much $$$$ to tint this little car, although I was told by my friend that the Sonic sedan has the largest back window he has ever seen on a car even for a full size Benz!!

Today I asked the dealer where I bought the car who they recommend and they sent me to a different operation... and it was even more expensive. $305 + tax.

Looks like all the shops in town have set their prices at the same inflated level.

I'm sure that since it's a college town they figure they can get all of the kids buying with mummy & daddy's money to fork out stupid money.

Fork that. I'll just go without tinting the windows.

Though he is right(to an extent), its a dickhole move to actually say it to you. Just be patient and shop around. Like Insanika said call some dealers, or try looking online for something. I would never go back to that guy after I was told that. In the modern world of telephones and internet, he is NOT the ONLY game in town
