USB Port Issues

2013 RS Manual.

I charge my phone in my car all the time and I think I screwed up the USB port in the upper glove compartment. When I plug my charger in it makes a quiet whining sound and my phone does not charge. Should I just take it into the dealership or is there a trick to fixing this type of thing? Not very tech savvy.

I have found problems with non oem apple charge,data cords. Oem works perfectly. They are ridiculous in price though.

Why use the car's usb to charge your devices? It only outputs 500ma. Why not buy a $9 12v to USB adapter that will charge your devices at a much higher rate and not possibly damage the USB port for your radio?

I have noticed that running Bringo and streaming pandora with the apple cord will maintain full charge. With a knockoff cord power will run out in short order.

I've tried 2 knock off cords with my iPhone. One wouldn't work at all with the USB port, he other would keep disconnecting and connecting every 20 seconds. The knock offs seem to work ok with the cigarette lighter adapters. But even then the cord doesn't last half as long as the originals. Now I just spend the extra money so I don't have the headache.
