So i will preface this with how I got to the point of replacing both vvt solenoids. Roughly early/mid 2023 I started having P0420 codes which I replaced in this order bank1&bank2 o2 sensors then after a couple months found that my catalytic had a hole and the innards exploded which required me to replace the manifold/catalytic combo which i replaced with a mid to upper priced unit from rockauto. I then made it 2-3 months before P0420 popped again claiming bad catalytic converter. I replaced the upstream or bank1 o2 sensor again which P0420 popped again after a week I think and I decided to let it roll baby and have driven up till now (100's of casual cruising miles with multiple round trips of 800+ miles KS to OK with seemingly no adverse affects besides possibly some MPG loss but I'll just blame it on Kansas immaculate roads. I also probably 1000 to 2000 miles ago i went 6/8ths retard and put 2 or 3 holes in my fuel filler neck in the name of BASS which popped a EVAP code which I don't recall the number but it tanked my MPG a minimum of 100 miles with more likely being 150 miles less on a full tank of gas (Have part just waiting to install). Besides those problems I noticed my coolant didn't seem to be circulating and I believe I have a partially stuck open theromstat or idk honestly. Vehicle never overheats but the fluid in the reservoir never changes and my system doesn't seem to pressurize and It doesn't seem to want to burp any air bubbles out either (have part waiting to replace).
So to the reason I made this post. While trouble shooting the last problem with a gentleman at autozone he mentioned my vvt's were bad or on the way out and after saying nah it's always made that noise since mile 4 I then heard what he was hearing. I replaced both of them today and and holy moly it's like my car was given a shot of penicillin. After 30 miles the next start I noticed my check engine light was gone also noticing my car was acting different than it's usual prius look alike but acting like it's brother the 1.4l turbo. I restarted the avg mpg calculator to see my mpg resembled day 1 awesome mpg very high 30's. I do believe the evap will come back but I really think the P0420 problem we are all plagued with can be fixed by replacing those solenoids but I also go 4/7ths retard more than your average republican middle aged white man so it's just wishful thinking at this time.
