DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any damage cause to your vehicle. If you don't feel comfortable doing the DIY shown below, then take it to someone you trust to work on your vehicle.
Been a while since I posted a DIY but I have been waiting for this to come in for what seems like forever. As far as I know I have the first Sonic with a **FUNCTIONAL** and **COLOR MATCHED** shark fin antenna unlike the ones you will see on eBay that is just a plastic cover and I would imagine you would lose reception. Enough babbling. Here is the DIY.
NOTE: When ordering the antenna, make sure to specify if you have a sedan or hatchback because the bases for the antenna are different. Not telling them which one I had delayed my order for about a week because I didn't notice that I got an email from them asking which I had. The install directions are exactly the same for both.
Difficulty: Easy-moderate
Time to install: 15-20 minutes
You will need:
Spray detailer
Microfiber cloth
3M Automotive masking tape (the green one)
Visual Garage Shark fin antenna (Visual Garage Big Base Shark Fin for New 2010+ GM [01VG-BBGM] - $81.00 : Insane Speed Motorsports, When Fast Is Just Not Enough)
Flat head screwdriver
Ok, first remove the R/C car antenna by simply turning it counter clockwise.
Clean the area with the spray detailer and microfiber cloth.
Place shark fin over the base but **DO NOT STICK IT DOWN YET**
Line up the antenna so that it is centered and lined up correctly. Use the green tape to mark all four edges so that you know where to place it once you are ready to adhere it to the roof.
Use the bigger of the two screws included to screw in the antenna coil inside the shark fin. The order of the parts should be:
Screw
Washer
Antenna
Car
Remove the paper from the adhesive and **CAREFULLY** place it down so that it lines up with the green tape pieces that you placed down. After it is where you want it to be, press down on all four sides hard and firm for about a minute so the adhesive can bond to the car.
All done!
Bonus:
Here is a preview for the last thing that I am waiting for to FINALLY finish my Sonic..for now anyway...
