Cool thread.
I have so many, I think I should put them up for vote. I'll keep the ones I remember short. There are more, but most are more common, dumb things many have done like drove too fast with bald tires or bad brakes because couldn't afford to fix them. Or driving after a few too many. All back when I was young, stupid and thought I was invincible. When the cops would pull you over, take your keys, and make you walk or drive you home. But looking back now, knowing how dangerous it all really was.
Here are my contenders for the Darwin Award.
1. I was about 18. Doing brakes on my Fiat Spyder. It was so light I could lift front end myself. Any way. I got them all done, and wanted to test them, so me and a friend jumped in and a backed out and took off hard down the road. Slammed them on and they worked great. Pulled a U'y and drove hard home. Pulled in and stopped. Perfect Job. Except when I got out I saw all the lug nuts for all 4 wheels still sitting in the hub caps. Freaked my friend out, thought he'd kill me LOL. I think if I hadn't driven it so hard for the test, the wheels would have come off.
2. Crawled out the passenger side of the car while doing about 45. Crawled across roof and into the rear driver side window.
3. Went on a vacation about 3 hours from home in "Jean", my boat (Tan Chevy Impala). Lost keys somewhere and had no spare key. Was away from everything and only had a tire iron (Straight one, not the cross). It took me over 3 hours using that tire iron to chisel and pry that damn key hole open. It was so wide open I could use the sharp end of the Tire Iron to start the car. So we drove home. - I had the car for another year or so and never fixed the key hole. You should have seen some of the faces of people when I'd pick up the tire iron to start my car every day LOL.
4. Just had a daughter in 81' and was taken out by friends to celebrate. I got drunk and was stubborn, and I wouldn't stay over. Fought to drive home. I fell asleep and when I came to, I was driving on a sand bank between the road and an ocean/marsh area. Luckily I was able to keep driving and get it slowly out of the sand and back on the road. Also I was lucky because the Telephone poles had just crossed to other side of road, and I was approaching where they were crossing back to my side. I got out, got some fresh air to wake up and thought "I don't want my Daughter growing up without a dad". Never drove drunk again. Hardly ever really drank again and Never kept booze in my house as the kids grew up.
