which roof rack to get?

i have read through some of the other threads, but some have gotten very long and outdated, so figured I would start a new one.

What are the options for roof racks? is the GM rack the best bet, or are there cheaper aftermarket racks that will fit a 2012 hatchback?

I want something cheap and easily removable. I will be carrying up to two bikes (usually one) or 2 9 foot surfboards.

also what should i be looking for as far as fit goes? my dad has some old thule racks that i would love to use, but based on what i have read it needs a specific fit?
