Experimental Dead Pedal Solution

After noticing that the dead pedal area on the floorboard is carpeted, and that the floor mats do not protect that area of the floor; This is what I have done.



This is what I used. Walmart has this in automotive.



I made sure the carpet was clean and dry, cut the product to length, and pressed in place; the self adhesive 3-M backing appears to bond very well.

As The thread states, this is experimental; Time will tell if this is a good solution. Cost is about $8.00 for two pieces.

instead of adhesive could maybe use some Velcro affixed to a piece of rubber/mat to allow for removal and cleaning.

This is why I pray weathertech gets on the ball. My wifes Yaris is also a carpeted dead pedal. The weathertech mat covers and protects it nicely.

I so wish car companies would stop doing this.

After a couple months since installing an adhesive backed EPDM rubber tread pad to the dead pedal area of the driver side floorboard; I am pleased with it's function. The 3M adhesive backing has bonded well to the carpet. The material provides protection from wear to the carpet, and a dedicated spot to rest my left foot.



I am interested in what others have done to provide a dead pedal in their Sonic.

I was driving my wife's Sonic today and I noticed how my foot likes to get hung up or scrape that area. It is only a matter of time before it is worn through.

How pliable is that stuff from Walmart? Thinking I'd like it to extend over the corner that faces the clutch pedal to give it more protection.



On a somewhat related note I noticed the passenger floormat is awefully short. I am a tall guy and I found my feet were above the mat and touching the carpet. Granted you probably can't see it if it gets soiled but I'd like to have something extend higher up there. Thinking I may contact Cocoa Mats to see if they would do something like that.

I was going to get a piece of diamond plate from home depot and bend and cut for the correct shape. then I was going to screw it to the floor. I should be working on it in the next few weeks I will let you know how it turns out.

The rubber tread material is flexible, but not enough to make a 90 degree bend. Wraping material around the bent portion of the dead pedal would further reduce the minimal clearance between the clutch pedal and the side portion of the dead pedal.

My first thought prior to using the adhesive backed rubber tread was to fabricate a deadpedal coverplate from aluminum sheet stock. I like your idea, and it would look good and function well; might be a little slippery when wet. I abandoned my first idea because of corrosion to the metal due to the use of road salt during our midwestern winters.

I'd be leery of drilling into the deadpedal area. Make sure you check to see what's under it and if drilling might allow corrosion or some other problem. (Speaking from past experience with drilling into car floors.)
