If this is the case why did GM tune it differently?

I would say 1) for reliability/longevity in general, but also 2) to mitigate the effects of abusive owners in particular.

Can't go wrong with keeping it stock if you want it to last.

edit: maybe also 3) because they only needed 138 hp to beat out the competition.

I need my car to last awhile, especially since I have bad luck with cars in general. With my RS I have had the trans replaced already. And the car I had before the sonic, was under the Michigan Lemon Law and I got money from the company. So I will probably not be getting my sonic tuned for awhile

The tune isn't as aggressive for the 1.8 as it is for the 1.4. You being automagic like me, it will just make the car a bit funner and nicer to drive and shift better.

well obiously I cant say with absolute certainty, and dont take this as me telling you what to do with your car. I'm just you because of everything you're missing, which may not be of any importance to you or others.

I will say one possible reason for the low output tune and funky stock throttle response............ Lowest Common Demoninator, Ie. careless owners warrant large service life margins to stave off warranty costs

Why do we have TPMS? Why dont we have a temp guage? Why do some cars have lane departure warnings or backup cameras? Kinda sorta a similar reason.

Alas you have a good point, any time an engine is making more power than stock it is eating into its service life. So does poor driving habits and/or maintanence which is why I expect my sonic to last as long as most other sonics.

My first Sonic was a 1.8 but it was an auto. The first time I took off on a hill in this Sonic with the AC on I thought I was in 3rd instead of 1st and actually checked.
