My 1.8 Sonic Auto MPG Read-Outs

I wanted to update for May and show as of right now i am getting 25MPG in my Sonic....

Also, I have reached 10,000 Miles!! Only took me a year and 2 months to get there lol.

Hah, in that time mine had 5K. I seriously should just walk to work. Hell, I apparently have 50 miles left on this tank from late April...

I reset it then and have 33MPG on my DIC, with a fair share of AC and spirited driving. Not bad, even accounting for its generous tendency.

But i just live in a small town and when you dont go out of town much you just dont add up the miles. Oh well. I love my sonic either way. I myself prefer to keep the miles down and have it for a long time vs racking up the miles and having to get something else within a couple years. Everyones different lol.

so i take it cruise control would be a plus for me in the long run since i have a sedan.

I believe there is a GM kit for cruise control.

Cruise control is worth it. When we bought our Sonic, that was mandatory for the type of driving we thought we were going to be doing with the car.

And we did the long distance driving for the first seven months we had the car. Then our daughter changed transferred colleges, coming home, so, distance driving was virtually eliminated. Oh well.

I can say the cruise control works best when on flat land. if you use it when going thru an area with lots of hills and dips of decent grades, the cruise control will be overly aggressive. what i mean by that is it will ease off as it should going down the hills, but once you hit the going up part it will over compinsate for the grade incline and Revv high shooting the rpms way higher than need be to keep the speed. aka 3k to 5k at times rpm's. but overall when on flat land it helps alot at gaining MPG. Hilly areas, i recommend using your foot to guide the vehicle thru those areas then when back on flat land switching the cruise on. Just my thoughts and opinions from using the cruise control on my sonic. 1.8 Automatic...

Common sense should tell you when cruise is going to increase or decrease MPG. Its been that way since cruise control was first offered in the auto industry. Its called cruise control, not hill climb assist.

MPG Update - June 2013

Filled up this morning, drove around all day thru town, slow takeoffs, coasting down slopes, light braking, and at the end of my running around for the day This is what i ended up with for MPG doing city driving only.... Not bad opcorn:

After driving around today and doing the same techniques i was able to get my 1.8L Auto Sedan to achieve the following Numbers With City Driving only! :banana:

Hello everyone, so I just got my 2013 chevy sonic hatchback automatic in blue topaz metallic with the 1.8L under the hood. I absolutely love the vehicle!! It had 10 miles when I got it out of the dealership. I've had it for a week now. I now have 320 miles on the car and I'm getting 22mpg. My job is about 14 minutes away in so so traffic. And two times a week I go to my other job which is about 18 miles away from home and that's where I got it up to 22mpg driving 55-58mph coming back home with no traffic. I'm not a crazy driver I accelerate slowly, brake slowly, and when I use the ac its always at 1 sometimes 2. My question is will my mpg get better? Also sometimes I think I made the wrong decision by not choosing the 1.4L. Simply because of the very slim mpg difference I didn't feel the extra cash was worth it well in the automatic. And lastly before my sonic I had a 2001 honda civic automatic. I'm hoping to at least get the same mpg with my sonic that I did with the honda. I never did calculations with the civic but I only went to the pump once a week.

The more you drive your sonic the more the engine will break in and give you better results. usually as $ub$onic said around the 4k-5k mile mark will you get the numbers to really climb up to where you expect them to be. The first oil change is most definetly needed around the 2k-3k mark to flush out the particles from the engine being broken in. Nothing to worry about, unless you wait too long to change that first oil like say 5k or later. otherwise you will be fine and begin after that oil change to see the numbers increase. at first when i got my 1.8 auto the numbers were ok. but with time and miles driven and several oil changes the MPG has gone up. as shown in my many pics ive uploaded.

Alright, cool I'm hopeful opcorn: Really at 2k? I was told by my sales person to go for an oil change at 5k

The first oil change will have all the metal shavings in it from break in. Not a good idea to have them in there more then it's needed. After that they say you can go 7500 but I never go more then 5k

I'm excited to see that mpg progression its fun. I would be very happy at 31mpg. When doing the oil change should go back to the dealer or somewhere else?

Yup, i remember my first full tank a gas was way off of what i was expecting, but the more i drove the more it was getting better. As of right now i'm getting 32.3mpg with the 1.8 auto sedan, but no matter what setting you put the AC on it will drop you mpg a bit more.

Good mpg number! Yeah I always try to have the ac off when I'm off the freeway unless I'm with my lady then that's when the ac must be on at all times haha. Ohh and also is it better to turn off the ac before turning off the car?

Any full synthetic is good even for NA engines.

The fan setting for your AC being at 1 or 2 will consume only a minute amount of power less than setting it to 4. The fan doesn't use nearly as much energy as required by the compressor and condenser. If your AC is on you may as well adjust it for comfort.
