MPG going up on my 2012 1.8L Sedan

So I have had my 2012 Sonic for about a month now. It has been filled up 4 times and I have been averaging around 24-25 MPG up until I filled up yesterday.

Yesterday after filling up at my usual fueling station and driving the same route I always drive, my Sonic was showing an average of 29-31 MPG! I am super happy to see this increase in gas mileage. My sonic currently has about 875 miles on it.

Has anyone else noticed an increase like this? Will it continue to improve as time goes on?

Yes. Do you really expect the car to get great mpg right off the lot? Stuff takes time to break in.

I will say my hatch got 32 the day I brought it home and after 26k miles and mods later I can avg 40 pretty regularly

I’ve noticed:
1st fill up: 26 mpg (suburb-ia driving)
2nd fill up: 28 mpg

Took a lil’ trip last weekend: 36 (hi-way driving)

1.8L Auto with the air on - Pretty satisfied

That's AWESOME! Happy to hear that you're getting good mileage on your Sonic. As some of the other members said-- it does take time for the vehicle to break-in. I'm glad it did!

I'm averaging 32.3mpg with over 60,000km so roughly 35,000 miles with the same 1.8 engine and sedan. I have never resetted the mpg in the car since I bought it brand new. Most of it is 50/50 highway and city, but I do notice I get crappy mpg in the city with AC on, especially the past couple of days with 45 degrees Celsius and my Ultra gauge alarm beeping saying "ambient temp 125 Fahrenheit".

The mpg on my 1.4L Turbo Hatch has never changed much since it was new. I seem to average around 32-33mpg. I rarely drive over 65mph, and most of my daily commute is on the interstate.

My engine is dead stock, no engine/tuning mods.

I currently have 8084 miles on my Sonic. I doubt it will ever get 40mpg as advertised.

Yeah, I've noticed my mileage increased as well. Always averaged around 28mpg up til around the 20000 mile mark, now I average 32-33mpg no change in driving habits or routes. I drive about 50/50 city and freeway. Sitting at just under 27000

Mpg 2013 1.4 turbo sedan

I normally get 30 -32 average, I drive 75 to 85 when on the interstate, I'm happy with that. Did my first short trip and set the cruise at 77, granted I slowed and sped up as traffic changed but I averaged 44.6 mpg fron Lansing to Detroit. My highest avg I saw was 45.7, I'm super pleased with my mpg. I just turned over the 3000 mile mark.

Great to see your mpg getting better! I myself average 29-32mpg. Recently, the mpg meter has been accurate. The highest number ive seen on the fuel range so far has been 375. Ive had my Sonic for three months and have driven 6,753 miles.

That's great news. There is a break in period for new cars and MPG does increase. If you're interested you can find out more information on page 9-13 of your manual.

I have 3500 on mine, just drove a trip all HWy and only got about 30mpg on a full tank out and on the way home same trip that was a full tank each way i got 28mpg . So far i am not even close to the window sticker and its a bummer.

I bought a 2012 LT 1.8 auto with about 38k. this is the first week that I have driven it to work and I am averaging 34.3 MPG so far combined city and highway.

I am curios about the type of oil to use for the best gas mileage. The manual recommends 5w30 but most Fords recommend 5w20 for their cars for increasing gas mileage. It is not the only car maker that recommends that grade and it makes sense as the oil will not be as thick as the higher grade. What does Chevrolet say about using 5w20?

I don't really go above 3k rpm. Easy on the gas, all my mods made a difference too. But on the other hand with all the mods it can get thirsty when you run her hard

Well in the city its hard to go over 3k.. im always around 2 or 3k
