DIY Rear Diffuser

Not my cup of tea. And my guess is that it's probably worse for aero.

Definitely worse for areo. With no holes the air traveling under the car will escape out the back without any issue similar to air going over an airplane wing. Now that the OP did this "mod" the air traveling under the car, now has another "outlet". Even tho there are now holes, air that bypassed this area before is now trapped in the rear bumper swirling around like a tornado, trying to get out of the holes.

Theory will never compare to tested and proven results, I will run it at the strip and compare to my previous trips. You can compare a sonic to hondas, trucks, and air planes, but this mod is on a chevy sonic. If you have a similar mod on your sonic and had negative results then you might have something to say, but you will never get outside the box if you never try.

Honestly, it's not something I would do to mine. But I have nothing negative to say about it. Looks like you did a skilled job on it. May or may not have positive effects on drag coefficient. But being able to say "first"...... I know that feel. And it's a rewarding one.

Nope, I'm an design engineer whose designed front splitters and rear diffusers before. I've done intake work for concept cars. CFD testing on anything that would involve moving air.

I was simply stating that this isn't going to work like or be a diffuser. Google "speed holes". This is exactly what you've done.

Maybe you should stick to headlights.....

I did it to eliminate the drag in the rear bumper, but I did it low enough on the bumper to help with the air disturbance caused by the "scoop" shape of the bottom of the bumper cover. It is not a true diffuser, but it "acts as a diffuser" also. The ride is smoother at high speeds, and has almost zero "float".

It adds a little bit of looks, and smoothes out the ride at higher speeds.

You should add a rear wing now. You know, because it provides downforce when you're doing 40 mph. Oh and don't forget the stickers for that extra 5 HP per sticker.

I never brought up hondas, this mod is on a sonic.... If somebody else already did this mod maybe they have feedback on the current discussion.

It's a 2012 with just over 30k miles. Likes traveling, carrying my MTB, road trips, camping, meeting and driving new people around. Likes to have fun but also enjoys a quiet Sunday under the car port shade. Well-mannered and low maintenance. Doesn't mind when I drive other cars and don't talk to her for a while. She's easily turned on any time I desire and likes it rough on occasion.
